Career Opportunity Studies
Career Opportunities Studies (COS) is a Work-based Learning course that offers a variety of hands-on opportunities for junior and senior students to gain real-world experience in a business, industry or with an organization related to their career goals, where the skills students have been learning can be utilized and expanded in real work situations. Students may be placed in either a career/non-profit internship, a pre-apprenticeship/apprenticeship, on-the-job training, non-profit youth boards and/or may be placed with a community expert mentor in their program of study. COS assists in and prepares students to transition to the world of work, demonstrating the ability to perform both hard and soft skills in a professional context. The Work-based Learning Coordinator works with CTE students to find the optimal placement based on both the student’s ICAP, interests, program(s) of study and career pathway; additionally, the Work-based Learning Coordinator supervises, coaches and evaluates the student during their placement. Students attend workplace readiness orientation and participate in seminars during assigned class periods for the year. Students create and maintain a professional portfolio during their placement, and are expected to prepare a presentation for the COS-Showcase at the conclusion of the course to highlight their learning and experience in work-based learning.
