Common Black App
One app, endless HBCU opportunities.
The Common Black College Application (CBCA) is an HBCU-exclusive platform that makes applying to college simple and affordable. For just $20, students can complete one application and apply to 65 member HBCUs—covering nearly 60% of all HBCUs nationwide. Unlike other platforms, CBCA asks students to rank their top four college choices, helping schools better understand their interests. In addition to the application, CBCA also provides a private Facebook forum where students, parents, counselors, college access organizations, and HBCU representatives can connect, share resources, and ask questions—making the journey to college more accessible and supportive.

Common Black App - FAQs
Q: How is it different from the Common App?
A: Unlike the Common App, CBCA is exclusively for HBCUs, and you’ll also rank your top four school choices as part of the application.
Q: How many schools can I apply to?
A: Your application is sent to all 65 member HBCUs, which is nearly 60% of all HBCUs nationwide.
Q: What makes the Common Black App so special?
A: It’s the only platform dedicated solely to HBCUs, making the process faster, more affordable, and more supportive for students pursuing education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It also connects students, families, and counselors with HBCU representatives through a private Facebook forum.
Q: Will all schools see my application?
A: Yes, but keep in mind that some schools may only review applications if you selected them as one of your top four choices. That’s why CBCA recommends contacting each school you’re interested in—by emailing the admissions office or calling to ask for the person who handles Common Black College Applications—to make sure your application is reviewed.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The total is just $20—regardless of how many of the 65 schools you choose to apply to. Payment can be made via PayPal, debit, or credit card.
Q: Who can use it?
A: It is for any student looking to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), whether you are applying as a freshman, transfer, or international student. You may be a U.S. citizen, identify as undocumented, or currently hold DACA status.
Important: Transfer students should be aware that they cannot use the transcript upload process; instead, they must send their official transcripts directly to the institutions they wish to apply to.
Q: Is there extra support for students and families?
A: Yes! CBCA’s private Facebook forum brings together students, parents, counselors, college access organizations, and HBCU reps to share questions, ideas, and best practices.
