Literacy

Students will review the elements of fiction they learned about in previous grades. They will take the lessons that are learned from the stories and use them to relate to the problems the characters face. Students will also be introduced to the American frontier as they listen to various tall tales and explore the elements of that genre. Students will use their knowledge of the elements and characteristics of fairy tales and tall tales to write about a scene from a story and rewrite a fairy tale on their own.

Students will also focus on the Skills Strand which provides instruction in foundational reading skills, such as phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, and language skills which includes conventions of English, spelling, and grammar.

Math

Students will continue Module 1: Sums and Differences to 100. Students will apply skills they learned in first grade to fluently add one-digit to two-digit numbers at least through 100 using place value understanding, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Social Studies

Students will be working on an All About Me bag. They will collect 3 items to put in the bag that represent something about themselves. They will share their bags with the class.

Science

Students will be focusing on Social Studies for the first half of the quarter with Science instruction occuring at the second half of the quarter.

Harmony SEL

Families have many goals for their children. Some of these goals include being fulfilled, happy, confident, responsible, kind, and loving. Teachers want these outcomes for their students too. We recognize that you are also one of your students’ teachers and we want to partner with you in supporting their personal and academic success. To support these goals and to help students build social and emotional skills, we are pleased to share that we are implementing Harmony SEL in our school community.

Harmony is a social and emotional learning (SEL) program for pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students that gives every child opportunities to learn vital relationship-building skills in a supportive learning environment. In addition to having personal social and emotional benefits, SEL is associated with significant gains on academic achievement tests. The Harmony program is designed to build healthy relationships among students by having them engage in activities that promote understanding and respect. Over the course of the five units listed below, students will embrace their abilities to learn, collaborate, and spend time together.

• Supporting Our Community
