Online Digital Tools Consent Form
- MCPS teachers may utilize a variety of supplemental online digital tools to reinforce the district’s instructional program. These tools have been evaluated to be safe for student use and are consistent with federal laws on student data privacy. MCPS requests your consent to allow your student to use the supplemental tools, as these tools may collect personally identifiable student information, such as first and last name, classroom teacher, or grade level. This information is typically collected by online digital tools to enable use of the tool and to track student progress.

Literacy

Students will continue Knowledge 3: The Ancient Greek Civilization. This domain will intriduce students to an ancient civilization whose contributions can be seen in many areas of our lives today. Students will learn about the gods and goddesses of the ancient Greeks, the city-states of Sparta and Athens, and the philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. They will learn about the first Olymic Games held in honor of Zeus, the significance of the battles of Marathon and Thermopylae, and the conquests of Alexander the Great. Students will also learn about the Greek contribution of democracy. Lastly, students will use the writing process to plan, draft, and edit a short piece of fictional writing.

Math

Students will continue Module 4: Addition and Subtraction within 200 with Word Problems to 100. Module 4 is devoted to three major areas of work. The first two are building fluency in two-digit addition and subtraction within 100 and applying that fluency to one- and two-step word problems of varying types within 100. Students’ increasing fluency with calculations within 100 allows for word problems to transition from being mere contexts for calculation into opportunities for students to see and analyze the relationships between quantities. The third major area of work is developing students’ conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers within 200 as a foundation for work with addition and subtraction within 1,000 in Module 5.

Social Studies

Throughout marking period 2, students study and apply the skills of analysis and metacognition to develop conceptual understandings about geography and culture and the relationships among these two social studies topics. Students begin by exploring how geographic tools are used to locate and gather information about places on the Earth such as, continents, oceans, the equator, the poles, and countries. Students explore how geographic characteristics influence choices about food, clothing, and shelter. This

concept is expanded as students compare the Wampanoag and Pilgrim ways of life in the early 1600s.

Science

Students will focus on Social Studies for the beginning of Quarter 2.

Harmony SEL

Our classroom is starting a special unit as part of our Harmony Curriculum called Valuing Each Other. In this unit, students learn to value others by appreciating their contributions and taking their perspectives. Students develop empathy, build relationship skills, and stand up for themselves and others when they see unfair behaviors, creating a welcoming and supportive classroom. Important ideas from each lesson include:

Appreciating Our Differences

· We are all the same and different.

· We are all unique, and this uniqueness makes us special.

· We can learn both from and about one another.

Including Everyone

· We understand how it feels to be left out instead of included.

· We can make sure others feel included.

Breaking Stereotypes

· We understand that stereotypes are based on guesses about people because of groups they are part of instead of actual knowledge of a person.

· We can get to know others and “pop” stereotype thoughts to ensure everyone feels included.

Showing Empathy and Supporting Others

· We can put ourselves in “someone else’s shoes” in order to understand how others may feel in a situation.

· We can use empathy to help others and make our relationships stronger.

· Empathy is one way to show we care about someone.

Standing Up for Others

· We can recognize when a situation isn’t fair and take steps to make it fair.

· We can use empathy to support others in an unfair situation.
