Students learned about Albreje wooden sculptures created by artisans in Oaxaca Mexico. They learned that these animals are usually a combination of two or three animals that are carved in wood, sanded until smooth, and then painted with various bright colors, patterns, and traditional designs. After learning more about this artform they designed their own imaginary creatures using a variety of different animals as inspiration for their hybrid creations. Once they designed their imaginary creature they then decorated them using more than one pattern and color. Lastly, they designed a decorative border using their unique creatures tracks for inspiration for the design.
Students learned how to mix their own colors into tints and shades by mixing any color with black and white. They drew and depicted their own idea of a gemstone or diamond and then painted the inside in order to show a variety of tints, tones, and shades of that same color. Using their previous color knowledge they finished their beautiful painting by adding their colors compliment as the color for the background so that their gemstones would stand out even more.
Students learned that OP art stands for Optical Art or Optical Illusions. They looked at and discussed several different Op artists and their work. After using these artists as inspiration they created their own original optical illusion through a repetative line and shape drawing.
