Here's an introduction to the tuba:
The tuba is the largest, and therefore the deepest in pitch of the brass family. It may not be the first instrument that sprang to mind when you thought about joining band, but it is definitely one of the most important. It's a great instrument to play if you love very deep, mellow sounds - and if you want to make a difference to the tone of the band without being a show-off! While some tubas are rather large, we have smaller ones that are suitable for year 7 students to start on, which are lighter and easy to handle. Furthermore, each tuba student gets the use of two instruments - one to play at school and one to practise on at home - while paying only one hire fee. Tuba players are found in bands and orchestras, and the tuba has re-emerged in recent years as a very popular jazz instrument. The sousaphone is a variant of the tuba, and is played exactly the same way, it's just shaped differently.
