This band is currently divided into two groups of approximately 40 students, who each have one timetabled class per week (in addition to their weekly instrumental lesson).

During this class students develop skills learned in Year 7 Band to a more advanced level. This includes playing longer and more complex musical selections with the potential to develop a greater range of musical expression, and widening students' experience of different musical styles.

Performance activities they may expect to engage in include playing for Year 7 Welcome Night, Junior Concerts in the school hall, McKinnon's annual Winter Concert held at Robert Blackwood Hall, and events such as the Victorian School Music Festival.
