Senior Winter Athletes Celebrated

By Oliwia Korycka & Valentina Kuttenreich February 16, 2022

The last week has been full of excitement for the MCI basketball teams and the student body in general. All of the positive emotions were caused by the annual Senior Night, which for the varsity girls and swimming team took place on February 8th. The varsity boys, indoor track and wrestling teams were honored on February 10th, both in the Wright Gym, home of Huskies.

This long standing tradition has been crucial for the school due to it’s beautiful meaning - honoring the eldest for their sports achievements, through acknowledgment for their families and friends - the seniors each gave out two roses along with taking pictures on the wall full of posters made by their teammates.

Class of 2022 varsity basketball players were the following: Danielle Dow, Natalie Sites, Anna Dospelova, Sofia Nocito, Ruby Kitchin, Lily Kitchin, Kaythean Martinez, Deniz Cifci, and Aidan Singh.

During the week teams faced two opponents from the state of Maine. The females under the supervision of Coach Bartlett defeated the MountView High School Mustangs 66 to 34, scoring various and hard three point shots. On the other hand, the males - together with Coach Day - played against the Waterville High School Purple Panthers ending the game with a brilliant conquest of 54 to 50. “I’m feeling pretty good, we took a W ( win ), I’m glad that the seniors got out there and got to play in one of their last home games,” shared junior Braydon Fitts.

Both matches were extremely successful and led the teams to prepare for the playoff season to which we got to know recently that the girls qualified for a match-up with the Foxcroft Academy Ponies. “I’m excited because we are a good team and I think we have the potential,” mentioned senior Danielle Dow.

Sadly the winter sport season is quickly approaching the end. For many teams it has been finished already. The spring sports begin at the end of March, so if interested to gain athletic experiences and new friends approach Mr. Leonard the Athletic Director at MCI in his office in the Weymouth building.

For the varsity girls we wish all the best and success in the playoffs!

Winter Sports Recap

By Alberto Di Girolamo & Stefano Mannino February 18, 2022

We are two MCI students and we’re gonna explain about the winter sports at our school.

There are two basketball teams, one male and one female. This season the female basketball team went well since they put commitment in every game. As senior Giulia Desiderio said: “In the new season we will be more prepared against every opponent and we will be able to beat them since we have a very united team and we always take care of each other.”

The boys’ team lost the last game against Waterville and went out of the tournament. We have interviewed sophomore Cihan Guzeltas, a basketball player on the MCI boys team, and he said that they aren’t happy for this season. They are ready and hungry for the new season coming and in particular he’s proud of playing for MCI. He wants to be present for his team and he’s very motivated when the crowd takes power in the gym to support him and the team.

In our school there is also an Indoor Track team, led by the coach Mr. Allen. In his interview he reported that it has been a good season for the girls that finished second at the conference championship, also the boys that finished seventh. The girl’s team was very competitive, since they lost only one meet, exceeding everyone's expectations.

Another available winter sport is swimming that students can practice at the Alfond Center in Waterville. The team is made up by three boys and nine girls and the coach is Mr. Ortiz. The season will start in March and the coach said that he wants to increase the number of boys in the team. The crowd allowed in the pool consists of only the parents of the swimmers.

About wrestling, MCI has a very small team that includes only three people. The coach is Mr. Libby and he says that he’s disappointed about the crowd that, due to the Covid situation, is meager. However the wrestling team is very strong in the few. The season started in November and will end in March because we won many matches.
