For MCI's first goal, sophomore Emma Burr took it all the way down to the other end of the field before passing to Moore who then passed to freshman Madeleine Roundy, who scored the first goal with 2:14 on the clock.

The Huskies second goal came when sophomore Trinity Leavitt hit it into the circle and to Moore and she scored with 39.0 on the clock.

The final MCI goal occurred when sophomore Hannah Robinson passed the ball to Moore, who then dribbled it all the way down and scored the goal with 11:35 on the clock. Boys Soccer Wins Big at Dexter, 8-0

By Asa Cianchette October 30, 2020

Tuesday’s (Oct. 27th) boys soccer game involving the MCI Huskies and the Dexter Tigers resulted in an impressive victory, due to the swift and accurate nature of the MCI boys soccer team. The Huskies scored early, and continued to score often throughout the duration of the game, while successfully denying Dexter the chance to appear on the scoreboard. MCI goals were scored by Senior Shawn Park (2), Junior Camden Roy (2), senior Leon Stark, and sophomores Orrie Flood, Mason Graham, and Zane Dean.

The Pack Rockets to Win over Cony in eSports

By Justin Kim October 29, 2020

Thursday, October 29, there was an eSports Rocket League game between MCI and Cony from Augusta, with the Huskies winning 3 games to 0. The Pack, which is the MCI eSports team name, were already showing tremendous skills in practice games. Rocket League is a video game that is like playing soccer but with cars. The Pack won the first game 10-1, the second game 4-0 and the last game 5-1. Freshman Bryan Wiers and junior Tyler Rowe played well for MCI. Another junior, Tyler Strom, seems to be a great player for the Pack, who knows how to comfort his team members. When MCI gave up a score to the other team, Strom tried to cheer up his teammates. Also, if one of them scored a goal, he was more delighted than anyone on the team.

Cony Secures Tight Victory against MCI Football

By Asa Cianchette October 27, 2020

Friday night’s game (Oct. 23) between the Maine Central Institute Huskies and Cony High Rams can be described in a single word; riveting. After scoring 8 points in the first few minutes of the game, Cony quickly swept in to regain control of the scoreboard from MCI through the remainder of the first half. It was in the second half that it turned into a neck and neck battle, with MCI gaining on Cony. With roughly 5 minutes left in the game, MCI regained a lead, which was swiftly taken back by Cony with less than a minute left in the game. MCI pushed on, determined to gain just one last lead, but efforts to do so were in vain, as Cony clutched the victory at a very tight 31-30.

Field Hockey earns Sudden Victory at Gardiner

By Lydia-Mae Roderick October 20, 2020

The MCI Huskies beat the Gardiner Tigers 2-1 in two overtimes. Within just the first 4 minutes, one captain of the MCI team, junior Gracie Moore, scored an incredible goal. The rest of the first half of the game, MCI held a steady balance of defensive and offensive pressure, particularly held up by juniors Lily Kitchin and captain Alivia Ward. Into the third quarter, MCI had the Tigers on heavy defense as they were powering in for more goals, that particular heavy offense was delivered by sophomore Emma Burr and junior Ella Louder, along with Ward and Moore. However, it was quite a shock when in the last quarter, the Tigers scored a goal, causing the game to go into a double overtime. Eventually, in this sudden victory playoff, Gracie Moore struck again, scoring the final winning goal.

Girls Soccer, Skowhegan Play to a Draw

By Dayun Kim October 20, 2020

The MCI Huskies and Skowhegan played to a tie, 0-0 in this match. There was a stiff defense and offense in both the first half and the second half particularly from MCI sophomore Ava Smith, as well as seniors Emelyn Hatch and Natalie Hodgins. The goalie for MCI was junior Samantha Martin and Skowhegan almost scored a goal in the first half of the game, but Samantha did her best to make a save. Our MCI huskies did their best and made an effort to get a score.

However, throughout the 3rd quarter Skowhegan trumped, scoring their 3 goals. Our MCI boys were still making an effort though, and managed to score when senior Tristen Wintle took a direct kick, and landed it into the goal.

Football to Play 7 on 7 Version this Fall

BTP Staff October 8, 2020

State guidelines have not allowed for full contact, 11 on 11 football to be played by high schools this fall. However, many schools including MCI, have opted to play the 7 on 7 touch version that is allowed this fall, and hold out hope that an 11 on 11 season can be played in the spring. The Huskies have been one of the state's best football programs over the last 6 seasons, having played in 5 state championship games, winning in 2016 and 2017. The Huskies are also no stranger to the 7 on 7 game having played this version in summer leagues. The format for the fall version is slightly different as not only will back and receivers participate as is the norm in the summer but linemen will also get a chance to show off their passing and catching skills, which should be fun for all.

The Huskies open the season with back to back home games on Alumni Field against Waterville on Thursday, Oct. 8th and John Bapst on Friday, Oct. 9th.

E-Sports Joins as New Game in Town

BTP Staff October 8, 2020

MCI joined the ranks of schools participating this fall with a full squad that will begin participating in matches in mid-to-late October. The MCI e-Sporters will play Rocket League and League of Legends on computers in MS 106. See Mr. Leonard for more details and look for an upcoming story in the BTP.

The Growth of Indoor Track

By Emma Burr March 5, 2020

This year's indoor track season recently ended. There have been eight seasons of indoor track at MCI, and this season had the most athletes with 43 students. Many of the kids on the team have grown as athletes. One student that has grown in so many ways is Olivia Smith. Because of her knee injury, she had to “sit out” for the season. She may have not been able to participate in the meets, but she was just as much a teammate as the next person. “Instead of giving up and quitting track, I suppressed my anger and eventually forgot how upset I was,” Smith shared. Smith could not do all the activities that everyone else was doing, but she worked just as hard to keep herself in shape for next season.

Another person that has grown as an athlete is Carrie Burr. “I have grown in high jump because I beat my personal record of 4’ 8”and improved to 4' 10” shared Burr. This took Burr a lot of focus and patience. The team as a whole has grown, this is because they don't stop trying and lift each other up when some of them feel down. Alex Mason genuinely thinks that the team succeeded in this season of indoor track. “Coming 4th in KVAC with such a small team going against bigger teams such as Winslow and Cony” shared Mason. That was Mason's favorite part of the season. Overall this season was superb and exciting, all had fun at practices, meets and hanging out with our friends. Don’t miss another season and come do track with us!!!

Fencing Club Going Varsity?

By Kadin Hertlein March 5, 2020

Recently, there has been speculation as to whether the Fencing Club should become a varsity sport. This would open up a new opportunity for students to get involved, and play in a high school sport. The two people really pushing for this to happen are Mr. Cleon Grover and Mr. Chris McDonald. The fencing club has been a part of MCI since the year 2000. The original instructor was Mr. Jim Tyson, but the job has been passed on to Mr. Grover who feels very passionately about fencing, and started participating during his high school career.

I interviewed a few fencing members about their opinion on the matter. One of these students was Riley Nelson. He is a freshman here at MCI. He’s new to the sport of fencing, and has already made great progress. Fencing is important to him because it’s one of the only sports that he participates in, and it “fulfills the inner mystical sword fighter in him.” With the agreement of Lillyana Marcello, a sophomore, it’s important for MCI to have a fencing team because it will draw in foreign exchange students. Fencing is a fun sport that relies on skill, and the history behind fencing is interesting to learn, and would appeal to many students. Lillyana wants fencing to become a team because more competitions are opened up to the members. She has been fencing for a couple of years now, and thoroughly enjoys it; “plus, nothing is more stress relieving than getting to whack someone upside the head with a pointy metal object and get away with it.”

Even though having a fencing team would greatly benefit MCI, there are issues regarding funding. For a team to practice, they need the electric equipment used to fence. This includes electric helmets, swords, jackets, scoring machines, and reels. All of this costs several thousand dollars, and that is after a facility that has the proper amount of room for practice is found. To help fund the team, fencing members have searched through yearbooks from the 1990s and up searching for previous members of the team. Employees of the administration office later call the members found and ask for possible donations. This was brought to attention during a school meeting on February 10, during a rousing demonstration by the MCI Fencing Club. Since then, a few members have joined, though not on the scale that the instructor was hoping for. Students can help make the club into a team simply by joining or showing interest. It is the goal of the school to make a fencing team to draw in more students, and provide opportunities for students to try new things. And through the help of MCI students, this goal can be achieved in the near future.

Maine Central Institute’s Baseball Team has started off this season with enthusiasm.

By Edith Tierney April 10, 2019

Coach: Eric Day

Last Year’s Record: 7-9

List of Players:

Seniors: Hayden Caldwell, Seth Bussell, Huy Nguyen, and Kempton Roy.

Juniors: TJ Stewart, Owen Williams, Dom Wilson, and Isaac Bussell.

Sophomores: Gavin McArthur, Joseph Curtis, Cole Steeves, Elijah Bagley, Thomas Ulrickson, Alex Roy, Tom Parker, and Parker St. Clair.

Freshmen: Nathan McKenney, KK Martinez, Logon Cote, Aidan Singh, Jordan Plamondon, and Caleb Bagley.

Outlook/Comments:

This is Day’s fourth year as the head baseball coach, although he was an assistant coach for the team for four years directly preceding his time as head coach. He says that he coaches because of the passion he has for the sport. His father coached baseball for 15 years and the passion his father had for it passed on to him. He explains he wants “... to share [his] enthusiasm and knowledge of the game and help others to embrace the sport.” He loves having the ability to teach his players the lessons his coaches taught him. The most important lessons are those that not only improve the team, but are also valuable life lessons.

Coach Day explained that the team’s goal for the year is to “...build upon where [they] left off the second half of last year.” The team is aiming to make it back to playoffs where last year they lost a “...tightly contested game 9-5 to Hermon.” Coach Day explained that the players have already shown improvement in their skills and attitudes. These things should help contribute to the team achieving their goals.

This year the team members are all very strong players. The starting lineup will consist of seven players, all of whom are in either their third or fourth year as starters. Coach Day expects that the team will rely upon the experience and leadership of senior captains Hayden Caldwell and Seth Bussell. Both captains are in their second year as captains of baseball and both have held leadership positions in other sports teams at the school. Other team leaders include TJ Stewart, Dom Wilson, Owen Williams, Isaac Bussell, Joseph Curtis, and Kempton Roy.

The Coach also explains that the team members from the Sophomore and Junior classes have a lot of athletic talent. He further addressed his hope that the players will focus on maturing in the mental aspect of the game. Coach Day has been impressed by “[s]ophomore Joe Curtis [who] looks like he will step in and be [the team’s] ace this year.” As well as his classmate, Gavin McArthur who is an important asset in both offense and defense.

Schedule:

The team’s home games are played in Manson Park in Pittsfield. The first game of the season will be at Morse High School on April 16th at Noon. The first home game is on April 19th at 1:00pm against Lawrence High School.

Girls track team stands a good chance for success

By Kiaya Delano April 10, 2019

Coaches: Mr. Jason Allen (head coach/sprinters and pole vaulters), Mrs. Jessica Libby (distance and jumpers), Mr. Lincoln Robinson (throwers)

Last Year's Record: 14-7, 8th place at the conference meet

List of Players:

Freshmen: Alivia Ward, Sydney Dawes, Samantha Martin, Melody Linkletter, Hailie Murray, Shelby Ostrowski, Lillian Verrill, Kaitlin Labonte

Sophomores: Emelyn Hatch

Juniors: Alexis Tardy, Carrie Burr, Samantha Leonard, Danielle MacGown, Ava Patterson, Alahna McCarron, Alex Mason

Seniors: Sylvia Anderson, Katelyn DeViller, Christa Carr, Caitlin McKenney, Blake Dawes, Josie Libby

Outlook/Comments:

Sydney Dawes, an athlete who specializes in the shot put, claimed that her goal this year was to make 25 feet, and with this year’s track coaches this might just be possible. Coach Robinson, one of MCI’s science teachers, prioritizes shot put when he helps coach track. Seeing how Mr. Robinson has been coaching the sport for eight years with help from other coaches, he knows what he’s doing. One has to question though, what makes doing something for so long worth it? Well, according to him, "the energy the athletes bring make it all worthwhile." He also hopes that all of his athletes PR each meet. (PR=personal record, a common term used in track that signifies your best time or distance for something) But do these athletes have the ability to accomplish a PR every meet? Realistically, no- the amount of improvement every practice would have to be super hardcore, but that isn’t to say it’s impossible. After all, Mr. Robinson see’s opportunity, and big improvements in his athletes already. So will all of this positivity lead the track team to States? Note that not all track athletes will make it to states, track is an individual sport where making KVAC’s or States is dependent on the athlete's ability to make a certain standard. According to Coach Robinson, the track team is still too young and Mr. Allen agrees. Mr. Allen, a history teacher here at MCI, has been coaching track for 19 years. He is the head coach, and specializes in coaching the sprinters [and pole vaulters]. Coach Allen noted that this year has had the most freshmen out of any other year which is seen both positively and negatively. The side effects of having so many young-ins this year in contrast to other years, is that there’s a lot more “hand holding” this year. The new kids don’t yet know a lot of the routines that the track team has in place yet- but with that comes learning which Mr. Allen hopes will make them successful in the future to be better athletes. So although there isn’t a whole lot of hope for states this year, that doesn’t mean the team isn’t looking forward to the next few years and putting their best foot forth into this year.

The first meet of the season is scheduled for Thursday, April 18th at Thornton Academy.

Fall Sports Recap

By Hayden Caldwell October 23, 2018

Field Hockey: MCI Field Hockey had yet another winning season. This year the Huskies were 10-4-0 under Nancy Hughes and her coaching staff. With their record they were in the running for another postseason push. Eyeing another state championship appearance, making it what would be their fourth straight.

The Huskies were seeded fifth in their conference and had them facing the Belfast Lions in the quarter finals. During the season the Huskies only had one matchup against Belfast, with the Lions winning 2-1, but Belfast would not be the winning team in this second matchup.

With 19 seconds left in the first half, the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal by senior captain, Allysah Greene. After a scoreless second half by both teams the Huskies defeated the #4 Lions 1-0. The win advanced the Huskies into the semifinals with a matchup against the #1 Gardiner Area High School, a team the Huskies had beaten 1-0 in their lone regular season match-up. Unfortunately the Tigers would top the Huskies this time, earning a 3-1 victory, ending another great season for the Huskies.

Although it was a “shorter” season this year than previous years, the Huskies still have a lot of accolades to show all of the effort they put forward this season. This includes one MCI senior being recognized as one of the state’s finest player. Madisyn Hartley was named a Miss Maine Field Hockey finalist. Hartley is one of five players being recognized in the entire state for her incredible performance this year. The winner will be announced on Dec. 2 during a banquet at the Augusta Civic Center.

Golf: The MCI Golf season ended with two Huskies representing MCI in the MPA’s Individuals Championship on Oct. 13 at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

Senior captain Anna Smith competed in the lady’s tournament for the Huskies and after nine holes of golf, she was tied for the lead. She ended up placing fourth in the state.

Sophomore Thomas Parker battled in the men’s tournament. Parker was tied for fourth place after nine holes and wound up finishing eighth after the full 18.

Football: After winning back to back state championships (one in Class D and one in Class C) the Huskies have no other intention but to win another gold ball. Coach Tom Bertrand and company have led the Huskies to a number one seed in Class C - North with a record of 7-1. The Huskies started off the season with a shutout loss (28-0) against the Leavitt Hornets (#1 in Class C - South), but have since rattled off seven straight wins.

The Huskies clinched the number one spot after winning an overtime thriller against their rivals the Nokomis Regional High School Warriors. A recap of the game can be seen here (https://www.centralmaine.com/2018/10/19/mci-football-edges-nokomis-in-ot-thriller/). After kicking what would be the game winning field goal, sophomore kicker Kyle Burger-Roy is now being nominated by 92.9 The Ticket for the First National Bank HS Athlete of the week (vote for Burger-Roy by visiting the 92.9 The Ticket’s website).

This season has been one of the most exciting with numerous radio and live game coverage including a home game against the Hermon Hawks that was highlighted as WABI-TV5’s game of the week. Senior running back Tucker Sharples was also brought into the light with a touching article written by the Morning Sentinel about where Sharples finds his inspiration (https://www.centralmaine.com/2018/09/26/mcis-tucker-sharples-doesnt-look-far-for-inspiration/).

Their playoff push starts with a home game on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:00 against the Belfast Lions on the Alumni Field Athletic Complex.

Soccer: Both boys and girls soccer missed out on the chance to continue their seasons past the regular season. But, they were both in contention for a playoff spot all the way until the last second.

Boys soccer coached by Scott Varney and assisted by Slade Emery posted a record of 4-8-2. On the last day of regular season games the Huskies waited to see how the heal points would play out. When it was all said and done, they were only two heal points away from making the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Girls soccer headed by coaches Autumn Pepin, Stacy Erving and Erin Fitts capped off the season with a 5-9 record. Although they were four spots away from the playoffs they had the seventh most wins in the entire Class B - North standings.

Baseball Looking For a Push Into Playoffs

By Hayden Caldwell May 22, 2018

After getting the first win of the season the Huskies are now on a string of four victories in the last five games. As of right now they are now in contention for a playoff spot, being the 12 seed. This would be the first time in over 15 years that the MCI baseball team is in the postseason. The Huskies only have three games left this season and want nothing more than to win out.

One of the biggest wins of the year was against crosstown rival Nokomis. After this game, the confidence of this young Huskies team has never been higher, which is leading them on the run that they are currently on. Most of the players on the team have won more games this season alone than they have in the previous seasons of their high school baseball careers.

Two of the key pieces for this baseball team are the two seniors who have been with the program since their freshmen years, Pedro Matos and Norman Duncombe.

“This year’s team is different than any other team I’ve been apart of, lots of energy we are all having fun, but we know when we got to work and go out and perform, and in the last 2 weeks we have done that,” said Duncombe.

Matos added, “this year it feels like everyone on the team is connected and have better chemistry than the past teams and that is translating to the field.”

The final stretch of games for the Huskies consist of: Wednesday, May 23 against Mount View in Thorndike; Friday, May 25 against Winslow at Manson Park (Senior Game); Wednesday, May 30 against Leavitt in Turner. All of the start times for these games is 4:00.

Many are hoping to see this team make their long awaited return to the postseason.

Softball Picks Up First Win VS. Mt. View

By Hayden Caldwell May 10, 2018

Yesterday afternoon the MCI Huskies softball team won their first game of the young season. The game was held at Manson Park where the Huskies (1-7) won 11-1 against Mount View (0-9).

Following the game Junior Kendrah Willey said, “we were really psyched about winning our game yesterday!” For a young team getting their first win of the season really helps out with their confidence level. “We worked really well together on defense making sure that we executed simple plays, but we also had some very impressive outs as well.” An in game adjust the Huskies had to make was their timing as hitters, Kendrah added that “we had to make sure we timed up with the pitcher because she was a little slower than what we have been seeing this season.”

The Huskies came out with a fire and energy that was unmatched by the Mustangs. After scoring four runs in the first inning it set the tone for the team for the rest of the game.

“This game gave us a boost of confidence that we really needed. We are really looking forward to see what the rest of the season will be like for us now that we have found our groove,” Kendrah said.

The Huskies will travel to Caribou Saturday, May 12th, to play a doubleheader against the Vikings (2-6). The first game starts at 12 pm, and the next game to follow a lunch break.

Husky Throwdown: in the Eyes of a Champion

By Caitlin McKenney May 8, 2018

Despite the lack of an established track at MCI, they still find a way to host a home meet, the Husky Throwdown. Not only is the Throwdown an opportunity for throwers around the state of Maine to exercise their abilities, but it also provides a great opportunity for the MCI Track team to raise a lot of money for funds. While everyone at the Throwdown performed relatively well, a certain shot-put champion stood above the rest. Christa Carr, last year’s Class C Shot Put State Champion won the shot-put event at the Throwdown, as well as placed formidably in discus and javelin. This was a great meet for her, because she was able to beat her personal record by nearly a foot; what was once 36’ 11.5” is now 37’ 10.25”. This was Christa’s third year competing at the Husky Throwdown, and through an accumulation of three years, she has experiences to reflect upon. When asked about the contrast between her first throws of freshman year and her most current throw, she replies “I’m stronger, I’m older so I’m more used to it and I know what is going to happen going into it. I’ve been throwing for three years so I have my form a lot better.” Stance and form is a big part of the power of the throw. “Freshman year I was just doing a power throw and now I’m doing a full glide, so that’s a huge difference,” she continues.

In addition to winning the shot put at the the Throwdown, she also was able to defeat her supposed ‘rival.’ According to Christa, “It was awesome, it felt awesome, and finding out I beat her by over a foot was even better- it gave me confidence.” I also asked Christa to get real about their relationship. She states that “I mean, we’re nice to each other, but we’re not going to go hang out on a Saturday night...we always make sure to say ‘hi’ to each other.” It is always good to have a cordial relationship with competitors.

Christa’s ultimate goal is to throw 40 feet by the end of the season. Every afternoon at practice, after adding her daily dose of sunscreen, she works hard to improve her power and release.

Boys Lacrosse Getting it Done

By Dylon Peavey May 16, 2018

The Maine Central Institute boys lacrosse team is a program with MCI students and Nokomis Regional High School students combined to make the team. The boys lacrosse team has to combine the two schools because MCI alone does not have enough players to make a full team. The boys lacrosse team has been a varsity sport for 2 years now. There is a varsity team and a jv team but the coaches like to combine it a little to see who has better skills than others. The record for the current season is 2-6. 2 of our attack men are injured. The head coach is Chris Hopkins. The assistant coaches are Adam Pomeroy and Eric Rowell. The team practices at Maine Central Institute. The team strives for success. There are times when we are goofy but when we need to get serious we get serious. During games the coaches are always recognizing the goods and the bads kids do. If you do something wrong the coaches will pull you aside and explain what you did and how you need to fix it. In practices we usually do line drills at first and then we practice plays and learn what you need to do if you are in a certain situation. I personally love lacrosse and this is my first year playing. The coaches have helped me get better as a lacrosse player and individually. There is another coach named Zach Ellis. He is the coach for defenders when we split up to attack men middies and defense men Zach will take the defense men and teach them skills because Zach was a defender for the MCI lacrosse team. Lacrosse is a very fun sport and I recommend people to try it out.

Girls Lacrosse Making Strides

By Dylon Peavey May 16, 2018

The girls lacrosse team is the same as the boys team where Maine Central Institute and Nokomis Regional High are combined. The girls practice next to the boys lacrosse field. Marry Alice Gould and Kirsten Pomeroy are the coaches for the girls lacrosse team. According to one girls lacrosse player practice is going great and they lost there first two games but won the second two. Girls lacrosse is different from boys lacrosse. Instead of wearing pads and a helmet you wear goggles. In girls lacrosse you are not allowed to hit each other like the boys are allowed. You are allowed to hit each other’s stick to get the ball. The girls lacrosse team is always looking for new players and is always looking to have fun.

Girls Tennis Gives Great Effort

By Dylon Peavey May 16, 2018

The girls tennis team is a group of girls from Maine Central Institute playing tennis. They usually practice in the gym when the courts at Manson Park are not usable. The coach for the girls tennis team is Mr. Buys. The girls tennis team does not have a lot of players on it but it does have a decent amount for a team. The girls tennis team does travel for games and does play at Manson Park for home games. According to junior Megan Farias they are the smallest team, and the girls have been switched around to different sports and they have not won any games. Mr. Buys is a great coach and always looks to help anyone who is struggling or needs help.

Huskies Spring Sports Preview

Boys Tennis Ready to Serve Up Exciting Season

MCI competes in the Northern Maine Class B ranks and the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference (KVAC). Their home matches will be held in Manson Park.

Their exciting schedule begins as they face Belfast Area High School at 4:00 on April 12th.

Luckily this first match will be held at Manson Park which will give MCI’s team a home court advantage.

Come and show your support! Good luck to our boys tennis team!

Softball Starts Season Looking For Post-Season Run

By Bartianna Brown March 27, 2018

Maine Central Institute is home to many sports teams, some more successful than others. As the varsity softball girls and their coaches gear up for this (hopefully) long season, the only words Head Coach Tony Stewart, Sr. has for them are “hopefully we go deep into playoffs.” Stewart, as well as the girls, know that this is a long, hard road for them to travel to redeem their record from last year, especially now that they are down players. Their record last year was 5 wins and 11 loses. Despite this, they were just 1 win away from making the playoffs.

As Coach Stewart says, “my key players are the whole team, they need to play as a team for us to be successful.” The team does not function without the hard work of the players as many of the players on this team know. Junior Kendrah Willey knows this all too well. She is dedicated to this team and proclaims her hope for the fast approaching season is “to continue improving not only my own skills, but the skills of our whole team. We have a really great group of girls and we all get along very well. Hopefully we will have fun and work together efficiently as a team to get things done and improve our record from last year.” Kendrah also goes on to say that her biggest hope of the year is to make playoffs because “we still have a shot.” The diversity of the team made playing together extremely hard last season. They were all young and as she said inexperienced and not completely willing or able to function as a team. Hopefully things turn around for them.

Other players on the team are just as excited for this coming season, one of the newer players to the MCI team is Jillian Frost. Jillian is a sophomore and although she is not new to the game the adjustment from middle school sports to high school is never easy. She mentions the difficulty figuring out who belongs where on the field and where they are most comfortable. It is always important to know who can bring what to the field and then figuring out a way to exploit that talent in a positive way.

A common goal for these players is to make the playoffs. Not only that, but to make it to the state championship game, where many of them feel they should have been last year. This road is long, they are all ready to put in the work. This work starts with figuring out where the new players are going and figuring out strengths sooner rather than later. All in all Softball is getting ready for an amazing season that hopefully ends with a state title to bring home.

Baseball Preparing to Hit the Diamond

By Hayden Caldwell March 28, 2018

March 26th was the first official day of the 2018 MCI Baseball season. The team as a whole is looking forward to a fresh start. After finishing 2-14 last year, even though they doubled their win total from the previous year, they feel they can increase their win total even more’ this year. With the core of the team coming back, only one player graduated last year, they are looking to grow as a team and build the program.

This year’s roster totals 18 players, with most of the players being underclassmen. With the entire coaching staff returning and the core of the team returning, it will be easier for the team to integrate the newcomers. This will allow the team to continue where they left off last year.

When asked about his thoughts on the upcoming season, senior captain Pedro Matos, said “this upcoming season will be my best season. I’m really excited because it is my last one and I want to make it a good one.”

The preseason for the Huskies will be a little tougher than last’s because of the increase in snow amount. With the likelihood of being inside for a large amount of time, Matos plans “to take full advantage of that time we use in the gym and make sure that I stay focused.” As a captain Matos looks for the top returners: senior Norman Duncombe, juniors Hayden Caldwell and Kempton Roy, and sophomores Dominic Wilson and Owen Williams to have strong seasons this year for the Huskies.

Matos concluded with “I hope to win a couple of games and I expect us to be a team that others don’t look right past.”

Opening day for the Huskies is Friday April 20th at Lawrence at 1pm. The home opener is April 25th against Waterville.

Boys Lacrosse Scooping Up New Players in Preparation For Season

By Dylon Peavey March 29, 2018

The MCI Boys Lacrosse team is combined with Nokomis Regional High School in Newport. They are a team that is on the hunt to try and win a state championship this year. Last season’s team went 4-8 to finish in 10th place in the State Class C standings. From last year to this year the team has gained a lot of new players. Junior Nathan Torres thinks that the team is doing a lot better this year and would love to win states.

The lacrosse coaches are Mr. Adam Pomeroy, Mr. Chris Hopkins and Mr. Eric Rowell who strive to work with kids and find their personal strengths and weaknesses to help them improve. A lot of kids that join the team have no experience in lacrosse. Some think they are not going to stay in the sport or even won't join because they think it’s too hard. Junior Dylon Peavey went into this sport not knowing anything but is already loving the sport and can't wait for the games to begin. “If I am doing something wrong the coaches will pull me aside and show me my mistakes and then show me how to fix them and I find this very helpful.” If you are looking to try a new sport this sport is a lot of fun and has a great community.

Boys Outdoor Track Season Begins With Enthusiasm

By Edith Tierney March 29, 2018

As spring sports start up, many teams, including Maine Central Institute’s Outdoor Boys Track team are getting excited for their upcoming season. The team held their first practice on Monday, March 26th at 7:00pm.

The team’s coach, Jason Allen, has been coaching the team for 15 years, and also spent three years as assistant coach. He says he originally chose to be a coach because he wanted to continue his involvement in athletics. The team’s assistant coach, Jessica Libby, has been the assistant coach for the past 10 years. She explained that she originally wanted to become a coach because she loves the sport, and because she personally learned a lot of skills in high school track such as hard work and the feeling of both winning and falling short. She added that her cross country and distance coach from high school “really influenced [her] and [she has] always wanted to provide that connection to someone in return.”

Coach Allen is expecting that the team will do well in the field events this year. He thinks this will be true because many of the team’s key athletes will be participating in the field events and because the team tends to put those events more in the spotlight than other events. The coaches identified seniors Devon Varney, Aaron Schanck, and ZyAnthony Moss, and juniors Matthew Glidden and DJ Neal as the team’s key athletes.

Coach Libby expects Matthew Glidden and DJ Neal to improve significantly this year. Glidden participates in hurdles, high jump, and sprints, and Neal is a racewalker. She explains that “they have both been very good in their respective events, but with another year comes greater experience, greater focus, and greater strength…”

Coach Libby explains that the events she is most excited about are long jump and triple jump. She says these are her favorite events to coach, “...because athletes are usually able to make big improvements as [they] refine their technique.”

Junior Nick Clark says he is particularly excited for his one mile and two mile events. He explains that this is because he hopes to qualify for states in these events.

Coach Allen admits that while he expects the team to do well in the field events he is unsure about the team’s overall success. He believes this because the team lost “...some solid competitors over the last three years or so.” He explains that this means there is a shortage of runners on the team. He adds that this year's goal will be to try to “improve [the runners] individually, and hope that by the end of the year we’ll be a more complete and finished product.”

The track schedule begins on Saturday, April 14th at Leavitt Area High School in Turner.

Spring Blooms Talented Girls Track Team

By Caitlin McKenney March 24, 2018

As the daffodils and crocuses begin to peek through the snow, so does the track. Naturally, this means that the girls on the team are all ready to get active. The team got back to work on the 26th of March to continue some business from last year. Christa Carr elaborates on her Class C State Championship throw in the shot put from last year. “I want to be state champion [in the shot put] this year for class B.” The Huskies have moved up a class, similar to what the field hockey and football teams have done. The girls have their own improved goals for this season. Both Emelyn Hatch, a freshman, and Alex Mason, a sophomore, would love to improve their 800 meter run times. Senior Allison Hughes, added “definitely my running times,” and she advises “of course you always want to improve on everything and PR every meet.” Allison having done track since she was six years old, really enjoys and values doing track and field. This season, she’s going to work on transitioning between a thrower and a runner, as she feels more successful running in sprints.

Overall, last year, the team had a record of 16-15-1. The girls were 12th in the KVAC (Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference) and 6th in the state. Head Coach Jason Allen is hoping to lead the girls to a more victorious season this year. He says that he wants the team to be as successful as possible, and to all improve on personal records. He wants to dynamically improve by altering the weight program to inhibit the team's ability to become “stale.” Allen also reflects on some of the top athletes for the team this year. Competitors should look out for are Hughes, juniors Victoria Friend and Carr, sophomores Mason and Carrie Burr, among others.

Despite the weather for the season starting out rocky, Coach Allen expects it to be “hot, dry, and dusty...the sun will rise, and the snow will melt.” The track should hopefully begin to clear out soon so the girls can get outside and run.
