Meet the Staff (Spring 2020)

James Beland

My name is James, and I am an 11th grade high school student. Despite my quiet nature I actually talk to myself quite a lot and, I don’t know why. But I do know that I am very passionate about trains. I love trains, especially steam locomotives. This connects to my next passionate thing, and that is Thomas the Tank Engine. I’ve known this show for my whole life. And I just grew up around it and love making story ideas, model railroading with them, and even drawing the characters. Another thing I’m passionate about is, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Quite a few people know this about me already. But no one teases me for it, probably because I draw the characters and show people. They can’t tease me for something I don’t mind others knowing. Activities I do on campus include, video gaming club, I generally draw art in my free time, and I hang out with some of my friends as well. My life goals are to become a train conductor and drive steam engines all day. I love the idea of standing on the footplate of a steam engine and just controlling it to move down the tracks. And that may be possible soon. During the next summer break, my family and I might be moving to North Carolina near a railroad. The railroad has three events a year. Two Day Out with Thomas’, and during Christmas, a Polar Express event. Another life goal is to get my own house and maybe even make a YouTube channel as I’ve always loved the idea of just playing video games as a job and even getting paid for it. But for now I just plan to get through school first and then do those things.

Emma Burr

My name is Emma Burr, and I’m a freshman at MCI. I am passionate about the sports I play, and I love running. When in 8th grade I enjoyed writing at the time and I wanted to be a reporter for sports, so I signed up for Intro to Journalism. On campus I play field hockey, indoor track, and outdoor track. Every so often I'll show up to the volleyball club and just hangout there. A personal goal that I want to achieve is to become a division 2 athlete at a college where I can become an athletic trainer. If I don’t become an athlete, I want to do something completely different and get into law enforcement.

Brennah Doolan

Hi, my name is Brennah Doolan and I’m in the 9th grade. I’m passionate about my family, my friends, my education and my future career. I started taking journalism and publishing because I want to work on my writing skills and it will help me when it’s time to write my Manson essay in junior year but, it really wasn’t my first choice. I still like the class anyway. I participate in robotics and key club but no sports. My goals are to be an anesthesiologist, have a good home and an amazing relationship with someone.

Michael Hathaway

I, Michael Hathaway, am a Senior. I am what you might call a nerd, with many of my hobbies being writing, D&D (Dungeons and Dragons), chess, and more. Frankly, I don’t know why I’m in this class. I joined in for my interest in writing and publishing, without realizing that a majority of the journalism and publishing class would be the former more so than the latter. But, despite this academic fluke, I have found myself really enjoying this class. In fact, I can confidentially say that Intro to Journalism & Publishing is one of my favorite classes now. As far as campus activities go, I’m not too involved. However, I do participate in Chess club. Despite what you might see here, I’m aspiring to be a police officer. I’ve been accepted into Central Maine Community College for their Fall 2020 Criminal Justice program, and I’m super excited about it. I don’t know where I’ll end up working, but I do know it won’t be in Maine. It’s way too cold here.

Kadin Hertlein

My name is Kadin Hertlein. I am a freshman here at MCI. My favorite classes are history and science. I am passionate about community service and my education. I am taking Intro to Journalism class to explore a different career path. As extracurricular activities, I am on the rifle team, as well as fencing and outdoor adventure club. My life goals are to obtain Eagle rank in Boy Scouts, and have a successful job that I enjoy.

Emily Lachapelle

Salutations, my name is Emily LaChapelle. I am a freshman at Maine Central Institute. I play basketball, sing vocal jazz (in Vocal Jazz “Equinox”) and concert pieces (in Concert Choir), get groovy with my friends in “Fellowship of Christian Athletes," participate in track, and just try to be a people person. I am taking “Intro to Journalism” because I have always loved to write, but I also like to share my opinions, as people may know. So I thought that this class might be a fun outlet for me. When I grow up I either want to be a high school history teacher, or a singer. I strive to do something that I enjoy. Enjoying life, and being the best you can be is what I focus on.

Jack Morton

I'm a Senior. I’m passionate about lacrosse and snowboarding. I’m taking intro to journalism so I don’t have to take chemistry. On campus I play sports like football, swim, and lacrosse. My life goals are to make money.

Jason Pyles

My name is Jason Michael Pyles, Jr. I am a junior and I’m passionate about sports. I play football and basketball for school. I want to be a pharmacist.

Abigeal Shea

Abigeal is a Senior at Maine Central Institute. She is very involved on-campus as a National Honors Society officer, Class Counsel officer, Civil Rights Team member, Yearbook member, Amori host, costume designer for the one-act competition team, tech theatre team member, and an alto in the vocal jazz group Caravan. Abigeal is also the author of The Lost Generation, which is a historical fiction poetry book set during World War I. You can find her book on LuLu.com or Amazon. Abigeal decided to take journalism to help her expand her writing to different styles. Journalism takes her out of her creative comfort zone and exposes her to another side of writing. During her free time, she enjoys hiking, gardening, and camping. Next year Abigeal is going to the University of Stirling in Scotland to study Scottish history and Creative writing. After university she plans to continue to travel and become an author.

Grace Stewart

My name is Grace Stewart and I’m a sophomore here at MCI . I’m taking Into to Journalism mainly because it was set in my schedule but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. Here at MCI I do softball and swim and after school I hope to have enough money to travel the world. One thing that I am very passionate about is napping. It's something that I do very often.

TJ Stewart

My name is TJ Stewart and I am in the twelfth grade. I am passionate about music, sports, and my dogs; shout out to Sophie and Lucky. The reason I decided to pick up journalism is because I read the Bell Tower Press one year and I thought that it would be fun to write articles based on what’s happening around the school. Seeming that some people have no idea what’s going on when they really should. I play baseball and soccer as well as doing the Rifle team. I also play the piano for the vocal jazz group Maiden Voyage and drums for another vocal group called Equinox. What I want to do when I grow up is be someone of importance.

Taylor Temple

My name is Taylor Temple but most people call me Tay. The people on campus know me as the crazy chicken lady. I’m a freshman here at MCI. I am passionate about animals and doing what I love. I'm taking Intro to Journalsim, so I have more options when I’m older. I want to do outdoors clubs and stuff that’s extra-curricular. I want to be a biologist and study animals.

Dominic Wilson

Hello! My name is Dom Wilson, and I’m a senior. This is my fourth year at MCI and I love it! I’m passionate about athletics, and spending time with loved ones. I’m taking Intro to Journalism because I heard it was a great class, and a lot of my friends were also in the class. I’m a three sport athlete, I play football (I plan on attending Husson University to play football), basketball, and baseball. I’m attending Husson with a major in Physical Therapy, and I’m planning on that being my profession in the future.
