Camp Prep Day: Tuesday 8th Feb
Camp Prep Day will take place for P3-6 on Tuesday 8th of February (postponement day Wed 9th Feb).
On this day we will look at:
- risk management of the trip
- practice erecting the tents (and figure out how to get them back into their bags),
- complete a bike check and practice some bike maintenance
- have a chance to challenge their riding skills
Leaving for Camp:
We do have an early departure on the first day of camp. The boys will be required to be at school by 6:30am on the first day of camp (Monday 14th for 9NSM and 9CBD and Wednesday 16th for 9DSM and 9DOS). We will be departing the school at 7:15 am.
Bike hire:
The boys are required to have their own bike for this camp. If you need to arrange to hire a bike for use on the camp please contact Tom Casey. We would appreciate it if you could do this in the next few days.
The boys are not permitted to use E-bikes for this camp.
Food:
All food is provided for the boys, apart from their morning tea and lunch on the first day. The boys will need a larger than usual lunch for this first day. For the boarders, the kitchen will make these arrangements. They boys will also need the capacity to carry at least 2 litres of water. This could be a couple of drink bottles or a camel bak in their backpack which they will carry as they ride.
If your child has any dietary requirements please let us know ASAP.
Camp Two (DSM/DOS) Transport:
If your son is on Camp Two (Wed to Fri) and you live closer to Lawerence than Dunedin and would like to collect your son from the end of camp, please contact me - donna.smith@mcglashan.school.nz You would need to be able to collect your son between 11:30 - 12pm on Friday afternoon.
Purpose
The purpose of this camp is for the boys to get to know each other better and to engage in a task that will challenge them in many different ways. This activity is also supported by in-class investigation, seeking to learn more about our local community and its history.
The dates of travel are:
Mon 14th - Wed 16th February
Wed 16th - Fri 18th
Both classes will start at Clyde and finish their ride at Lawrence.
We understand that for some boys this trip will feel bit daunting but we are careful to manage it so that they find a good balance between challenging themselves and feeling supported.
Parent Assistance - please note: we now have the maximum number of parents
We welcome parent helpers on this camp but spaces are limited due to transport and accommodation requirements. Although we love to have parents who are keen bikers, it is great to have anyone who wants to get involved; from being at the tail end to taking turns driving vans, mechanical or first aid skills are also greatly appreciated. It is also great to have someone speedy at the front too!
The two overnight stops are at Roxburgh and Beaumont. The students are overnight in tents while the staff and parents use cabin accommodation.
To register your interest in attending as parent help please complete the following form: https://forms.gle/ge7ymJXYDkUjQ7pDA
Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to confirm which classes will participate on which leg, but we will attempt to have this information available before the Christmas break.
For those that are confirmed as ‘Camp Parents’ we will have a meeting on Monday 31st January (time to be confirmed). I will schedule this meeting to coincide with the arrival day for boarders.
Assistance with transport
In addition to the parents who will attend the camp we are also seeking some support with the transportation of bikes. If you have access to a vehicle/trailer that would be able to assist with this, or could drive a vehicle on the transport days (Mon/Wed/Fri) we would like to hear from you too.
Please contact Tom Casey tom@mcglashan.school.nz to discuss.
Boys on bikes
Students will need to have their own bike for this trip. If your son does not have one, please let Tom Casey know and he can help you to make arrangements to borrow or hire.
Each student is required to have their own helmet.
There will be times that the boys will require their bikes at school in the first two weeks of school as we ascertain their ability level and provide opportunities to improve their skills.
For boarders it will be necessary to bring their bikes with them as they arrive at the hostel.
For the day boys we will make arrangements for delivery and storage of their bikes at school.
We will cover the specific details of this activity in much more detail closer to the time, this information is intended to give you an idea of what is involved in this first challenge.
