89 boys (4 classes) from a wide range of different schools
A mix of ability and talents and interests
Focus is on building individually, being the best version of you
Lots of new challenges which we will guide the boys through.
Get it right.
If you don’t, make it right!
This means that we always have the intention of doing our best and getting things 'right'. However, in a situation where we make a mistake, we then seek to 'make it right'. The focus is on what we can learn from our mistakes and how we can use these experiences to grow.
Ensure the students feel safe, valued and self-aware. We are working towards a culture of creating a diverse but inclusive community.
Targeted instruction - small class sizes are a tool to enhance individualised learning
Personal excellence - high individual academic standards
Building relationships and friendships.
Form teacher is your first point of communication with school.
Email is best as we can be tricky to track down during the day!
We really value clear two way communication.
The Form Teacher is also the Integrated Studies teacher - English/Social Studies/Philosophy 4 Teens
We advocate for the students with other teachers
We are the first port of call for discipline, health and wellbeing issues that involve the students in our classes
Please let us know if things are going on or if you have any concerns
Building relationships between the students / classes / with staff
Getting technology up and running - Google classroom, Kamar, Gmail, printing
Focus on reading - Refugee By Alan Gratz (novel study)
Building routines
Managing self: taking responsibility for your own learning, organisation, communication
Baseline assessments
CAMP!
This can be an area where boys experience a change to the expectations that have been on them from Y1-8.
Homework guidelines (Year 7-10) per subject
15-20 mins
Every 2-3 days
Around 30-60 mins per week
Not all subjects will allocate homework every week
Additional long-term assignments may require time on top of the above
If no specific homework is set, the students always have access to tools to revise areas of challenge to them and we would expect reading to be part of their nightly routine.
The hostel students are provided with approximately 5 hours of study/prep time a week - as a guide.
Organisation and communication is key - we have reiterated this with the students.
Homework should not be a stressful experience but there should be a level of challenge involved.
If a student is having difficulty in managing quantity, organisation, difficulty or ease of the work - please let us know.
We are very directed about the use of technology
The goal is to help the boys learn to self-manage
Their device is a learning tool and should be seen in that way in the classroom.
Phones are to be left in their bags, outside of the classroom
Please refrain from messaging the boys in class time. An urgent message can always be relayed through the main office if you need to contact your son before a break time.
Active McGlashan
'Tech-Free' morning tea and lunchtimes
Encourage to be active, engage with peers, fresh air and expend energy
Reading
We have a Sustained Silent Reading programme which the boys participate in each day.
Each class has a weekly library period
INTS Current Events Task
This is a weekly task given to the students as their Integrated Studies task. This allows us to engage with and investigate matters of interest in the world and encourage the students to widen their area of engagement and interest. These tasks are given at the beginning of the week and will generally be due at the end of that week. This is designed to allow students to begin to learn how they prioritise and balance their academic load, co-curricular engagements and other commitments.
These tasks will always involve a variety of skills, which could include:
reading / listening / viewing comprehension
variety of writing task
research
presentation
Teachers will allocate a weekly effort* grade in each subject based on the following criteria:
* Level of engagement in class
* Preparedness for learning
* Completion of tasks and assignments
5 = an outstanding effort
4 = working above the level that is expected in class
3 = working at the level that is expected in class
2 = working below the level that is expected in class
1 = poor behaviour or not completing work
These grades will be communicated to you via a fortnightly email but can also be accessed on KAMAR.
There are a variety of resources and supports available to students who would like a bit of a boost with their learning.
Numeracy Booster and Literacy Booster Class
This is an optional module that runs alongside the other module selections. The next opportunity to join this class will be at the beginning of term 2 when modules rotate.
Please contact your form teacher for more information or guidance on either of these classes.
Peer Tutoring
This programme is supported by our senior students who work alongside a junior student 1:1 to tutor them in areas that have been identified. This generally occurs on a Monday afternoon at 3:25-4:15 pm. However, from time to time we are able to accommodate students at different times.
Please contact Donna Smith regarding this.
