It is our hope that the information in this book will assist with a smooth transition for your son into the College environment.
In addition to this booklet there is a Student and Parent Handbook on our website (www.mcglashan.school.nz) that contains a wealth of information about the College. The handbook can be found by using the drop downs College Life, then Student Handbook.
There is also an ICT agreement and an Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) consent form to be signed, and returned to the College. This will help ensure we have up to date and accurate information in our system.

KAMAR – Parent Portal
KAMAR is the school's student management system. A key feature of this software is how it enables parents to access relevant information that the school holds about each student.
This includes:
Timetable Attendance
Caregiver details Reports
Medical Information Contact details
Results Qualifications etc
It is also where you will find the daily school notices.
The McGlashan calendar of events will continue to be accessed via the school website. www.mcglashan.school.nz
We expect that the parent portal will continue to develop to be a vital source of information about your son and a means of ensuring that accurate data is held. I encourage you to check in via the portal regularly.
You can access the KAMAR parent portal in 2 ways:
● the web portal kamar.mcglashan.school.nz (or link from school website)
● download the KAMAR app for iOS or Android.
(Use the server name kamar.mcglashan.school.nz)
Your username & password will be emailed later in 2021
Should you have difficulty with your logon credentials, please email chris.knopp@mcglashan.school.nz. Please note that boys will login to KAMAR in the same way but should use their own password.
Your assistance in checking your details online and informing us of any updates of contact or medical information (via the link) would be highly appreciated.
ICT Requirements 2022
The College is a BYOD (bring your own device) school. Increasingly, students and teachers are accessing most applications, communications, and storage online - the particular device, platform, or brand etc being used matters less and less.
In choosing an appropriate device for school the following points should be considered:
● You should expect to have at least 2 devices over your time at the College.
● Do you have a suitable device already that will meet your needs for the first year or so?
● At senior levels examinations are increasingly being completed digitally and require devices with keyboards - we would encourage developing keyboard skills as early as possible.
● Size, weight, battery life etc are important considerations - you will be carrying this device to every class - it needs to be sufficiently robust and protected in a case or sleeve whenever possible.
Parents are welcome to source devices wherever they can find the best deal although Cyclone Computers (Dn) is the school’s preferred provider.
You can access their online portal at https://www.cyclone.co.nz/byod/.
You will need to enter the school name and use the password: mcglashan2021
Student ID Cards
After photos are taken early in 2022 the boys will be issued with ID cards. These cards can be used at the school canteen to purchase a $5 voucher for lunch that will be charged back to their school account.
Canteen and Boarder’s Lunch
The canteen is a reasonably priced option for lunch. There are daily specials, and a variety of hot and cold, and healthy foods. Hot food and lunch orders can be made at intervals to be picked up from a separate line at lunchtime.
Our dining hall, which feeds our boarders every day, also provides an on-site option for lunch. Boarder’s lunch can be ordered for a term or for the year. The cost is charged to your account.
Sports App
Sporting information can be accessed on our sports app. Search 'School Apps' on the App Store or similar. Once downloaded, you can choose John McGlashan College in the drop down and then select what sports you want to know about.
