In 2014, McDowell County Schools STEM Leadership Team worked to develop a 3-year plan to support STEM in elementary-middle school. The team at this time was an elementary principal, a high school lead science teacher, a middle school technology specialist, an elementary math teacher, an elementary science teacher, a community representative, the superintendent, and an elementary and secondary instructional coach. The outcome of the 3-year STEM program was the creation of a middle school in which STEM was central to the curriculum. During its conception in 2016, Foothills Community School created its own STEM leadership team that serves as its school improvement team and advisor board. The STEM Leadership team first created our own robust STEM plan to guide the work and of Foothills Community School. This STEM Leadership team ensures that there is meaningful participation in the STEM pipeline through the curriculum, extra curricular opportunities, and is aligned to district/regional/state initiatives. The STEM leadership team meets monthly (3rd Wednesdays) and consists of our STEM leader, administrator, student body president, business/community leader, and parents. The STEM Leadership team has crafted this plan within our School Improvement Plan. The plan is currently under review for the next 3-year cycle, 2021-23.
