At least 75% of all teachers implement authentic, relevant and student-centered lessons at least twice per week. All students complete four projects per year in which teachers across all four subject areas collaborate and coordinate to engage students in project-based learning. At the end of each school year, to prepare for the next school year, students at FCS are surveyed regarding their interests and passions. The teachers then take the students’ interest to align NC standards to create projects that put the students in the driver’s seat. Students learn by investigating and responding to an authentic, engaging and complex problem or challenge. Teachers work to develop 4 long term projects per year that are interdisciplinary and work on the project daily. Teachers also work in content classes to plan according to the NC standards that support the learning and develop the students’ understanding to complete a viable project. Because of the way FCS organizes units, based on student needs depending on the topic, lessons are planned to personalize learning for students. Due to the looping nature and multi-grade classrooms that our school is known for, teachers work tirelessly to develop lessons that introduce, expand, and enhance learning that is specific to each student. Teachers consistently use hands-on learning opportunities to engage students in learning. This is evident in the manipulatives that they pull out in class to explain ideas and their lesson plans. In order to facilitate this even further, six members of our staff took an online course together through Harvard University. The class, Differentiated Instruction Made Practical, allowed our teachers to learn about quick and effective ways to mold any lesson to the needs of the scholars in their classrooms. Another personalized support catered to individual student needs are our What I Need (WIN) classes. These daily classes are based on student data to further provide personalized learning opportunities to meet the needs of those who may not have understood or might be in need of enrichment in the subject area. Students are reassigned to a variety of WIN groups based on their needs every 4 weeks.
