All teachers at FCS use multiple indicators of student success. Our scholars maintain online portfolios to show mastery of the standards used in the North Carolina Essential Standards and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. These portfolios contain work samples from all of their core subject areas as well as work of past projects that they are particularly proud of. Students also show mastery of the standards during our project exhibitions which occur during our quarterly open houses. These public presentations also allow our students to obtain feedback from family and community members who come in to see the work of other students. Another way students show mastery is through the completion of games like in our STEM Robotics class. Students are given the parameters of a game in which they have to build and program. They are given several days in which to work out any issues and then they are formally assessed by competing against one another.
FCS students are also assessed in traditional methods with the EOG/EOC or NC Finals and three times per year they engage in the NC Check-ins. The information learned from these traditional methods helps the teachers, administration, and parents ensure our scholars are transferring the information from the STEM projects to a standard format. The teachers work together to create common assessments to have quick indicators of student mastery. Students also are given quality formative assessments to complete quick data to ensure they are on the path to mastery.

Students use multiple portfolios to assess their progress. Students notebooks in many of the classes are considered portfolios because the notebooks keep track of the progress that students are making. Students are required to have an online portfolio and some students have these online portfolio attached to their signature for their email. For different standards, students are required to create portfolios of that standard that shows how far the student has come to master the standard. These portfolios are used to have conversations with the students on where they are at for mastery and what they need to do to get where they are going. If mastery is obtained, the portfolio is used to have conversation to push the student above and beyond mastery.

Here you will see one of our STEM Robotics class compete against one another as their assessment. They were to construct a robot which could toss two different projectiles across a cardboard box. They designed the robot, the attachment, and then had to program the robot in order to compete against one another.
