Students who qualify and participate in the 3rd-grade program will receive one-half day of specialized enrichment instruction in a pull-out gifted resource room at their elementary school. Students at Fairfield and Fort Miami will work with Mrs. Gail Salmon, the Gifted Intervention Specialist, one-half day per week in this setting. The pull-out enrichment class is designed to include advanced problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, research skills development, product design, and projects that require both individual growth and group collaboration.
In addition, the 3rd-grade team of teachers at both elementary schools have advanced training in gifted instruction and as qualified providers of gifted service, they create stimulating learning opportunities that directly address the gifted child’s academic needs. Identified gifted students who do not qualify for the one-half day instruction with Mrs. Salmon will be provided with differentiated instruction and enrichment opportunities within their classroom to meet their academic needs.
2nd-grade service will begin in March of the school year after the whole-grade screening and retesting process is completed for the second-grade students at Fairfield and Fort Miami. All identified gifted students will be provided differentiated instruction to meet their academic needs. Identified gifted students who qualify for cluster grouping in a WIN group will meet daily during WIN time at their school with a 2nd-grade teacher trained in gifted instruction. Students will explore their own giftedness using an enrichment-based curricular approach to learning, which will cover problem-solving, analytical, creative, and critical thinking.
