Written Education Plans - “What is a WEP?”
A Written Education Plan, or WEP, is a document required for any gifted-identified student who is reported by the district as receiving gifted services. This is in compliance with the Operating Standards for Identifying and Serving Gifted Students, Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15 (E). The WEP includes goals for the service provided, a method for evaluating progress towards goals and how progress will be reported, staff members responsible for delivering services, and an annual date for the next review of the WEP (typically the following school year).
A copy of the WEP must be provided to parents/guardians. Two copies of the WEP will be sent home. The district asks parents/guardians to please read the WEP, sign both copies, keep one for your records, and send one back to school to be kept in the student’s cumulative file.
When students identified as gifted are not served, parents receive a “no services” letter explaining the nature of the informal services offered and the enrichment opportunities available.
Withdrawal
If at any time a student wishes to withdraw from gifted services, the request should be written by the parent to the building administrator and gifted coordinator. If children request to withdraw, parents will be notified.
Acceleration
ORC 3324.10 requires all school districts to implement a student acceleration policy. Maumee City Schools Policy on Acceleration describes the process that shall be used for evaluating students for possible accelerated placement and identifying students who should be granted early admission to kindergarten. Acceleration is an intensive intervention that is appropriate for a small percentage of the student population. Some children’s areas of strengths are such that their needs cannot be met in the grade level classroom. Subject and whole-grade acceleration may be considered for any student, regardless of gifted identification.
Whole-grade or subject-area acceleration is considered formal gifted service in the initial year of acceleration only. Students that are accelerated will have a Written Acceleration Plan (WAP). Two copies of the WAP will be sent home. The district asks parents/guardians to please read the WAP, sign both copies, keep one for your records, and send one back to school to be kept in the student’s cumulative file.
If you would like to discuss acceleration for your child, please contact your child’s principal or Gifted Coordinator.
