Sometimes students struggle in school, either academically or emotionally, and it helps to talk about it with someone outside of their classroom. These students are invited to meet with their school counselor at any time.
All counseling is CONFIDENTIAL. It is a service provided for the students and does not become a part of their school records. State law mandates that all school personnel report suspected child abuse/neglect or threats of bodily harm to oneself or others. These are the only exceptions to confidentiality. Progress from individual school counseling may be shared with the child’s teacher and parents/guardians as needed, and in general terms.
If it is deemed by the school counselor that the student requires assistance beyond the school counselors role, we will provide the family with additional community resources.
Special note: Mathews County has a grant funded program with possible financial assistance and the opportunity to receive their counseling at MHS. If you would like more information about this program and the counseling center that provides these services, please call the School Counseling Office or email your child's counselor.
