During our MTSS times, students were asked to write and show different emotions and not just tell the emotion. Some fabulous examples from some of our 8th graders. Can you tell what emotions they are writing about?
I watch her. I watch my sister up on that stage, she is basking in the attention she is receiving from our parents, from everyone around. My sister was at the top of her class; valedictorian, everyone loved her, while I, her younger sister, stay in her shadow. All I have ever wanted was to be just like her, but as I watch, the sudden realization hits me, I am not her, and I will never be like her, getting everyone's attention, basking in the glow of approval. It makes me sick, the sudden realization, I am not her, and I will never be her, that approval is hers and only hers. But I so desperately want it.

John had always loved Legos and his mom knew that. When his mom bought his friend a present for his party that ended up being Legos, John was dumbfounded. Theodore, his friend, didn't like Legos as much as him whatsoever. Shockingly, when John's birthday came around, no matter how many times he asked, he got no Legos. It became even worse when Theodore ended up giving them away to somebody else, not even John.

Plop, a tear fell from Flora's eyes, then another and another. When she had first heard, she didn't believe it. She had fallen to her knees in front of all her classmates. Her breathing was faint, and there was a ringing in her ears, there was shouting around her, but she didn't really hear it. It couldn't be true, it just couldn't. But standing here now, she realized it was. Her older brother's eyes stared up at her, never blinking, never moving. She realized she would never hear him laugh again, tease her, tell her to do something stupid, then blame it on her, they would never go on that trip to Hawaii. Some tears fell from her eyes again, but then they wouldn't fall anymore. There was a deep ache in her stoamch and she couldn't get rid of it with tears.

When asked to explain love without using the word love:
It is a feeling you have for someone where you care about them very much, to the point where you would rather have the other person be happy than you.
Going home to find someone that makes you happy on your saddest days. It's like having your favorite food on your worst day. It is as if a kitten is playing with a ball of yarn.
You know that feeling when it's so calm and peaceful? It's the same feeling that you get when you see the people you care for. That feeling is love.
Knowing that you would do anything and everything for a person. It is seeing someone you know that you would give anything just to see them smile. It is scary, it is unknown, but it's you knowing that no matter what you could give everything for them.
