During this time of remote learning we want to ensure we continue providing clear and meaningful instruction to our students. New instruction in a single content area should only occur two days a week - for example: a new reading teaching point on Monday and Wednesday and a new writing teaching point for Tuesday and Thursday. You should continue to follow the sequence of units and learning that have been created by your grade level - but you will need to adjust and choose the most meaningful lessons. You will likely not hit every small standard. Focus on what is truly critical.
For the initial phase of our remote instruction, we recommend following an I do (modeling w/ teaching point) -- You do (something they can practice/investigate on their own) -- Share with me (evidence of learning on Seesaw, Flipgrid, Schoology (3/4)) model. This routine will make the learning plan predictable for students and families. You can set up the You Do section to ensure differentiation by asking open ended questions or providing some choice in what students practice and how they show what they know.
Provide students with one clear teaching point. You may need to restate what the prior learning has been and how this teaching point connects to the new learning. Remember, this is very different and kids may not hold on to the learning as easily. You will also want to model for students. You can do this using real tools like books and whiteboards in a video OR by creating a screencast with some type of demonstration.
You will provide the students with a way they can try out what they learned in their own reading, writing, math or other content area. Reminding them to use all those great tools that they have learned such as being flexible, persistent and/or any of the other 16 Habits of Mind. Be sure to explain what successful practicing looks like with clear expectations.
At times your students will need to share their learning with you so that you can ensure continuous progress. Some tools they might use:
Flipgrid
Seesaw
Pasting into a slide in a Slide deck
Padlet
