I am excited to welcome students to 2nd grade music class!
In 2nd grade, we build on what we learned last year. We keep singing, dancing, keeping the beat and practicing being tuneful, artful, and beatful, but in 2nd grade we start READING music!
The Pyramid of Musical Greatness keeps us focused on our goal in music - to be musical. All of the building blocks support that pinnacle. When we have fun, keep trying, etc. we are building a foundation that will lead to the top of the pyramid.
In 2nd grade, we begin music literacy - learning how to read music! We begin by learning duple rhythm patterns (quarter and eighth notes). Throughout the year, students will progress through a 12-step sequence of learning. Like learning a language, students will begin learning the rhythms through hearing and echoing (sound) before they start to read the musical symbols (sight).
Tuneful people are able to keep songs in their mind, create short melodies of their own, and sing well enough that people don’t beg them to stop!
Beatful (yes, that is how I meant to spell it) people can sway in time to music for their wedding and rock a baby to sleep with a lullaby.
Artful people see beauty around them, seek out artistic experiences in life, and support their local artistic scene.
