Unit 2: Literary Essay
In this unit, students analyze characters in a story. Students are expected to craft a claim about the character and write an essay following the boxes and bullets essay structure. The following is required: introduction, claim, 3 reasons with evidence from the text, and a conclusion.
Unit 3: Public Speaking: Book Talk
In this unit, students are writing a speech about a book they are passionate about. Students will then need to give a 3-5 minute speech on their topic.
Unit 4: Informative Writing
In this unit, students learn all about informative writing and how to write an ebook about teen activists. Students will spend time researching about teen activists and then with a group, they will each be responsible for writing 2 chapters. All sources need to be cited using Noodletools.
Unit 5: Documentary
In this unit, students are able to choose any school appropriate topic and learn how to create a documentary using WeVideo. Students will first spend time learning about the elements of a documentary and then spend time researching and taking notes about their topic. We will then share our documentaries in class. Documentaries should be between 3-5 minutes long. All sources need to be cited.
In this unit, we will spend time preparing for the Forward Exam. Students will learn how to write a TDA following a 5 paragraph essay format. They will also learn how to use text evidence in their responses. Students will also spend time practicing the Forward Exam through the Online Tools Training and the Item Sampler. Forward Exam dates for 2022 are 4/5-4/7 and 4/12-4/13.
In this unit, students will learn the difference between writing an argument vs writing an opinion or persuasive essay. Students will pick a school appropriate topic and will write about that topic supporting one side. They will need to research, take notes, and use direct quotes and facts in their writing. All sources need to be cited using Noodletools.
This unit is a fun way to end 6th grade writing. Students will be given to time to let their creativty flow through our song-parady unit!
