Offered at SL only, language ab initio is a language acquisition course designed for students with no previous experience in—or very little exposure to—the target language.
Language ab initio students develop their receptive, productive and interactive skills while learning to communicate in the target language in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
Oral assessment - Interactive skills (27-35 min.) Recorded
SL Only - Verbal explanation of a photograph/image that must be described and related to one of the 5 themes.
15 min preparation
12-15 min presentation
3-4 min describing the visual, relating it to on of the 5 themes and connecting it to various elements of culture
4-5 min of teacher questions related to the theme you referenced and asking you to expand on your explanations
5-6 min of general discussion on at least one additional theme.
Paper 1 - Productive skills
You will choose one of the three prompts provided. You will have to decide the appropriate text type to convey your message in the response to the prompt based on the choices given. They can range from knowing how to write:
Personal text - Blog, diary, email, personal letter, social media posting/chat
Professional text - Blog, email, essay, formal letter, proposal, questionnaire, report, set of instructions, survey
Mass media text - Advertisement, article (newspaper/magazine), blog, brochure, film, interview, leaflet, news report, editorial, pamphlet, podcast, poster, speech, travel guide, web page
SL - Writing 250-400 words -(1 hour 15 min)
Paper 2 - Receptive skills
Listening comprehension - 3 audio passages
SL - (45 min)
Reading comprehension - 3 written texts
SL - (1 hour)
