The prescribed themes of the course are inspired by the transdisciplinary themes of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the global contexts of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and are as follows:
These themes are a substantial element of every learning experience as the final assessment will require students to connect the themes to the tasks along with supporting details that tie-in with their knowledge of the target culture.
The recommended teaching time to complete the course is 150 hours for SL and 240 hours for HL
Oral assessment - Interactive skills (27-35 min.) Recorded
SL - Verbal explanation of a photograph/image that must be described and related to one of the 5 themes.
15 min preparation
12-15 min presentation
3-4 min describing the visual, relating it to on of the 5 themes and connecting it to various elements of culture
4-5 min of teacher questions related to the theme you referenced and asking you to expand on your explanations
5-6 min of general discussion on at least one additional theme.
HL - Oral explanation of a 300 word excerpt from one of the 2 literary works read in DP 1 & 2.
20 min preparation
12-15 min presentation
3-4 min presenting the extract which may be placed in front of you but you must spend the majority of the time discussing the events, ideas and message in the extract itself.
4-5 min of teacher questions related to the theme you referenced and asking you to expand on your explanations
5-6 min of general discussion on at least one additional theme.
Paper 1 - Productive skills
You will choose one of the three prompts provided. You will have to decide the appropriate text type to convey your message in the response to the prompt based on the choices given. They can range from knowing how to write:
Personal text - Blog, diary, email, personal letter, social media posting/chat
Professional text - Blog, email, essay, formal letter, proposal, questionnaire, report, set of instructions, survey
Mass media text - Advertisement, article (newspaper/magazine), blog, brochure, film, interview, leaflet, news report, editorial, pamphlet, podcast, poster, speech, travel guide, web page
SL - Writing 250-400 words -(1 hour 15 min)
HL - Writing 450-600 words - (1 hour 30 min)
Paper 2 - Receptive skills
Listening comprehension - 3 audio passages
SL - (45 min)
HL - (1 hour)
Reading comprehension - 3 written texts
SL - (1 hour)
