It's a demonstration of their skills in academic research and writing while exploring something of interest to them.
The letter grade from the EE is combined with their performance on the other 2 core elements, for a total of 3 possible bonus points toward the overall required IB Diploma score of 24 points. Candidates should expect to spend at least 40 hours working on their essay with supervisor "check-ins" of 3-5 hours.
