CORE element #3
CORE element #3
CAS requires students to take part in a range of experiences and at least one project. These should involve:
real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes
personal challenges that allow the student to show perseverance and creative thinking
thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting
reflection on outcomes and personal learning
Over the course of two years, you will need to perform approximately 150 hours of community service spread over the following categories:
Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking (~25 hrs per year)
Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the DP (~25 hrs per year)
Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student. The rights, dignity and autonomy of all those involved are respected (~25 hrs per year)
To help you keep track of your service, you should develop a journal. This can be kept on any number of Google Suite programs; this journal should allow you to:
track your contributions to the CAS project
track the dates and hours where action, planning, or reflection took place
note progress made or questions asked in class or in group discussions
organize goals, actions, and planning
practice reflection through writing or recorded thought in the form of video or audio
This is an excellent example of a document-form CAS journal that has been published.
Before you begin your CAS project, consider:
What are global issues that need attention?
What are local issues that affect your community?
What changes can you make to the way you live or the structure of your community that might help others?
What actions could you take to help each issue you have discussed? Are there any issues that are beyond your reach?
As you continue your project, you should:
track discussions that take place in class or outside of class
jot down notes about your activity in and out of school
regularly reflect on what has gone on that week
discuss with your group whether you are making meaningful contributions and service
