The District has adopted Lucy Calkin's Reading and Writing Workshop to help enhance students' development of deeper understanding and to become more reflective readers. In the upper elementary grades, we are no longer learning to read, we are reading to learn.
We also use Notice and Note Signposts and Questions to develop close reading strategies. These encourage students to read both Fiction and Nonfiction texts and ask, "So What? Why is this important? Why did the author include this? What could this mean for the character?" etc. Asking yourself these questions while reading helps students focus more on the actual passage and the development on the story rather than just reading words off of a page.
Finally, we have them check a book's reading level through ARBookFind. This website has been of vital importance throughout the years and will help you at home as well. Search the book of interest and find the "BL" (Book Level) to see if it is in your range. For example, a BL of 5.3 would be the reading equivalent of a reader at fifth grade, third month. This is an approximation of the students reading level. We always encourage students to read above their given reading level to enhance their developmental ability.
Libby - Got a library card? Want to check out books online? Like FREE things? This is the website for you! Follow the instructions to register with the website or app and you are able to virtually borrow books from the public library for free.
AR Book Finder - This is our favorite website for figuring out if books have AR quizzes on them and if those books are at the students independent reading level.
Wonderopolis - This website is helpful when you are wanting to know real answers to real questions or to learn some new Nonfiction facts. This website will be used frequently for Nonfiction reading.
Scholastic Book Wizard - Here you can use the search icon to find the guided reading level of MOST books.
Our Units of Study program uses Guided Reading Levels so you may start to see students receiving books labeled A-Z. We still use STAR and AR tests for reading, but use this conversion chart to guide students to read at their individual level.
This resource helps you see how novels change from each Guided Reading Level to the next and how to better support your student in their reading.
The Sonday System is based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach to teaching reading and spelling. It provides explicit instruction about the structure and system of the language and incorporates technology in daily instruction. The curriculum is structured, systematic, cumulative, and provides consistent multisensory reinforcement. Instruction follows the recommendations of the National Reading Panel and includes Phonemic Awareness, Direct and Explicit Phonics, Spelling, Fluency, and Vocabulary.
Each lesson contains the following components: Read Sounds, Spell Sounds, Read Words, Spell Words, Introduce New Material, and Independent Practice. The Independent Practice will be sent home as nightly homework with the daily word lists. Read the word lists with a family member out loud and complete the Practice Page to the best of your ability.
