We LOVE our math program! It breaks concepts down into their basic components and gives students multiple strategies to arrive at answers. Instead of being based on memorization, it is based on teaching a myriad of strategies. It is also based on a preview/review structure, so students see skills many times (and even across grade levels) before they are expected to master it.
There are two major components to our math program: Bridges and Number Corner. Bridges teaches all of the grade level standards for fifth grade while continuing to review concepts taught in previous grade levels as well. Many of the concepts cycle throughout the year, so students will continue to have practice with skills throughout the year.
Number Corner is where new skills are often introduced and later reviewed. It focuses on one major idea for an entire month so students can get a deeper understanding of the concept.
IXL will also be available again this year (yay!) and it works directly with our math program. Teachers are able to "star" concepts to focus on. Additionally, when students are stuck on a skill, they should use the help button to back the skill down to a place they can understand and rebuild it or ask for help.
Finally, if you are interested in more online practice, check out the website Math Is Fun for free interactive math games!
Most importantly, we want to build a supportive environment, where students can share their ideas and ask for help when they need it.
Below are links to helpful Bridges resources that are free and helpful for students and parents. Use these in addition to assigned work for the week to help hone your math skills! Click the buttons below to go to these helpful websites.
Graham Fletcher is an amazing math specialist who shows the connections in common core ideas. He makes it all make sense. These videos are fairly short and are really helpful to understand what students have learned and where they are going.

This is a digital copy of the Bridges Student book we use for independent practice on concepts we are currently learning with review on previously taught concepts. Pages here are mostly for independent practice, but may be assigned for homework.
This is a digital copy of the Bridges Home Connection book we use for home review practice or homework. Students should ask questions on problems they need support with - if it is too challenging, skip for now and ask for help when reviewing with your teacher.
This is a digital copy of the Bridges Number Corner book. We use this book to supplement concepts learned during our teacher lead Number Corner time. These concepts are reviewed for a whole month and have some review concepts incorporated.
