Dr. Chew, of Samford University, explains the importance of metacognition and how it impacts success. He also discusses four commonly held beliefs about studying that really derail our efforts. He calls them "The Beliefs that Make You Stupid".
Learning is Fast: IT IS NOT FAST! IT TAKES TIME!
You cannot read 8 chapters in one sitting and expect to have learned much. Plan to study and review material over many days for a test.
Talent is Inborn: YOU HAVE CONTROL AND SUCCESS TAKES HARD WORK! Students fall for thinking how well they do is out of their control...they were either born with it, or not. NOT TRUE! You get to control your success. Hard work is the LARGEST PART OF THE EQUATION.
Memorization of Facts: Students fall for merely memorizing facts. DON'T! It is not only hard work for your brain, but it also doesn't result in a good grade on the test. Dig deeper to make connections and really understand the material. MAKE CONNECTIONS and dig deeper with these strategies: HERE
Multitasking: Students love to multitask having their phone, music, tv on while they work. It does not work. Our brains cannot focus and our learning is derailed. Eliminate distractions while you study!
