In my classroom, devices are only to be used at my discretion. If they are seen being used outside of this sanctioned time, I reserve the right to remove phone or device away from the student and turn it into administration. If during the allotted time technology is to be used, I see any abuse of this time the same restrictions apply.
While the use of educational technology will be used throughout the year in my class, the use of personal devices is to the teacher’s discretion. Per the Marian student handbook, inappropriately used devices will be confiscated and those who are using cell phones or other personal electronic devices without permission of their classroom teacher or in violation of the school's Acceptable Use Policy and/or BYOT Policy. Confiscated equipment is to be turned in to the school office.
In order to prevent the temptation to use your device when not instructed to do so, phones and devices will be turned into the holder at the beginning of the class period and will be retrieved at the end of the class period per the instructor’s instruction.
PER MARIAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL HANDBOOK:
Students are permitted to bring cell phones and other personal electronic devices to school for educational use. Student use of all cell phones and other personal electronic devices during class periods is at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Teachers are to confiscate such equipment from students who are using cell phones or other personal electronic devices without permission of their classroom teacher or in violation of the school's Acceptable Use Policy and/or BYOT Policy. Confiscated equipment is to be turned in to the school office.
In an effort to increase opportunities to use these 21st century skills, Marian Central Catholic High School has established a BYOT program allowing students in certain classrooms at Marian to "Bring Your Own Technology" to access the Marian Guest Network during the school day under direct supervision of the classroom teacher for academic purposes.
By logging in using your username and password credentials, you are agreeing to Marian's Technology and BTOY Acceptable Use Policies as outlined below and in the Marian Student Handbook. Definition of Devices:
A device includes, but not limited to, the following: Notebooks/Netbooks, Tablet Computer(s), iPads, iPods, iPhones, and smart phones. All devices must be clearly labeled with the student's full name. Families are encouraged to register their personal device with the local police department. Thefts of electronic devices on school grounds should be reported to administration as soon as possible. Administration will work with the police department to file a report and investigate. However, ultimately the school is not responsible for lost or stolen property, so students should take extreme care when having valuable items in their possession.Network Considerations:
All students must use the BYOT Guest Wireless network while using their device in the classroom. Student filtering guidelines are a requirement of all schools in compliance with Federal Law. The Children's Internet Privacy Act (CIPA) requires that all network access in schools be filtered, regardless of the tool used to access the internet while in the school.
Students are prohibited from connecting to a private, unfiltered network connection on their device using a data plan. Marian Central is not held responsible for any charges incurred while using the device during classroom activities.Classroom Guidelines:
With classroom teacher approval, students may use their own devices to access and save information from the internet or school-owned database subscriptions, communicate with the teacher or other classroom learners, and use productivity tools that may be currently loaded on the student device. Students may use these devices in the classroom when the teacher deems them appropriate for educational purposes.Student Guidelines:
Students participating in the Marian Central Bring Your Own Technology program must adhere to the guidelines set forth in the School Student Handbook, Marian Central Acceptable Use Policy, and all school policies, rules, and regulations.
Each classroom teacher participating in BYOT has the discretion to allow and regulate the use of personal devices in the classroom and on specific assignments. The extent of classroom participation will be outlined in a teacher's syllabus. Unless otherwise noted, students are to assume the teacher is not participating in the BYOT program.
Students may not use the device for non-instructional purposes such as making personal phone calls, text or instant messaging, gaming, or to compromise the integrity of a test, quiz or assignment.
Devices may only be used to access information which is relevant to the classroom learning.
Devices must be on silent mode while on school campus or school transportation.
Devices must not be used to record, transmit or post photographic images or video of a person, or persons on campus during school activities and/or hours.Student and Parent/Guardians acknowledge that:
Internet connectivity on a device will be filtered by the Marian Central Catholic High School and any attempt to bypass the network filters is prohibited. No access to a 3G or 4G network is permitted.
Students are prohibited from bringing a device that infects the school network with any program designed to damage or compromise the school network and its contents. Marian Central reserves the right to collect and examine any device that is suspected of causing technology problems at school.
Printing from a personal device will not be allowed at school.
All devices must be charged prior to school and run exclusively on battery power while used in the classroom environment. Only in extreme circumstances would a teacher allow a student to charge a device in a classroom.
Certain applications may not display correctly depending on the device.
Using his/her own device to transmit or share inappropriate content during the school day will result in loss of BYOT privileges. Additional consequences may be applied based upon the circumstances and will be investigated by school personnel.
Transmission of material of bullying nature or sexual nature will not be tolerated.
Using the device outside of the classroom is strictly prohibited. The purpose of BYOT is purely for the extension and enrichment of the learning environment in a classroom under the supervision of a classroom teacher.
A student who violates this Policy is subject to additional school disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and/or expulsion. The decision of the school regarding inappropriate use of the technology or telecommunication resources is final.
Reimbursement may be sought for damage requiring repair or replacement of equipment where Marian Central, in its sole discretion, determines the damage was caused intentionally or with recklessness.
