Welcome to English IV!!!! This is your last English course for your time at Marian. This is the first year this course is active for Marian students. This class is based on collaborative discourse, meaning we all work together to make each novel and piece of writing worthwhile in your learning process. As such, you need to be prepared to participate in classroom discussions...this is not a suggestion, it is requirement of the course. This entails having read, annotated, and thought about the complete assignment carefully BEFORE class starts. Furthermore, you must bring your copy of the texts everyday required. Since we will be engaged closely examining the texts we read and the language that the authors use, if you do not bring your texts then you are not prepared for class, even if you had completed the reading outside of class. Naturally, this will also apply to texts you find online or use on a device (annotations are expected with this as well).
More broadly speaking: Ask questions. Be curious. You are more than welcome to have a different interpretation of a text than a fellow classmate or myself; just be sure to share your perspective in a productive and supportive manner, while respecting the thoughts and opinions of those around you. Since the course will be conducted as a seminar-and not a series of lectures-the substance of our classes will primarily consist of your responses to the course texts (general questions, impressionistic responses, or interpretations of particular passages/quotes), and secondarily my engagement to your responses. Your thoughts and questions will provide the starting points for our discussions. Your active participation will be consequently factored into your final grade of the course.
Outside of the course literature and texts, we will also practice the formal vocabulary program, supplemented with words in context that will be studied. You will also work to fine-tune your writing skills as you evaluate literary works, form opinions, and create detailed written responses to the works we will be reading. You will work to develop other lifelong writing skills that will include college essays, resumés, business letters, and other technical writing pieces.
Please login to your designated class Google Classroom for current homework assignments, handouts, electronic discussions, and additional educational resources to enhance your learning in my classroom. In addition, we will also be using Turnitin.com to upload essays and assignments to identify any works that may be plagiarized. Below are the class codes and passwords to enroll in each section for both websites. Please use your first and last names when creating accounts. You are responsible for your account information, in which I will have very little access to your personal account information. It is suggested for your to put information in your assignment notebook or (with permission of the teacher for in class usage) your phone or 1:1 device.
