Central idea: Human behaviour can affect the survival of our planet.
It has been an exciting time for Year 2 as we have delved further into our inquiry, thinking about the impact human behaviour can have on the planet. This culminated in the 'wear it wild day' on Friday giving the children the immersive experience of animals and conservation with a visit from the Fenn Bell Conservation Project.
Wear it wild day was also an opportunity for the children to put their musical and composing knowledge to the test, exploring Chrome music lab and Paint with music. It is wonderful the see the children being creative with the various instruments we have to practically play and then allowing the exploration of digital programmes to produce beats of music within a given genre.
We have started this journey using our geography knowledge, researching the northern and southern hemisphere; the countries within and the position of the line of the equator. The children were then able to produce a detailed climate map further enhancing their knowledge.
The children have continued to link their foundational art across the curriculum , using the abstract art of Mark Rothko to plan a 'journey' pictorially to inform our writing. The children have worked extremely hard to consider their animals and habitats to write our narrative combining all the skills they have learnt in year 2, we have been impressed with their use of expanded noun phrases, exciting vocabulary and speech.
In maths, the strategy of statistics has been our topic of focus, the children have delighted us in their knowledge of tally charts, pictograms and block diagrams to interpret data both 1-1 correlation and 2,5,10.
I am sure you have noticed we have adorned our classroom windows with broad bean seeds which the children are very excited about and diligently watering them in order to watch the seed coat crack and the roots to show before bringing them home for planting. This concluded a science focus comparing seeds, observing different types of seeds and the complete process of germination. The children are fascinated with the diary they will produce over the remaining weeks of this module, it is a race to see which year 2 class gets a bean shoot first!
