Central idea: Personal choices can impact the environment.
In this module, we explored the photographic works of Andreas Gursky, noting his use of digital editing. We then used the iPad to edit our own images, focusing on adjusting saturation and tone.
Following our litter pack around the school, we discussed the what we found.
Nixie: I am shocked. We found so much rubbish in 5 minutes.
Alfie: We need to tell everyone to stop dropping litter.
We decided to email Mrs Penning and ask if we could speak to the school during an assembly to show everyone what we found and to ask them to stop dropping litter.
Grace: It's bad!
Pearl: It doesn't look very nice.
Archer: But where does it all go?
We looked at where the litter goes and discovered that it often ends up in the sea after being washed down drains following rainfall. The children completed some research about plastic pollution in the sea. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is an accumulation of plastic rubbish, is bigger than some countries!
Freddie: This makes me feel so sad. The rubbish is there because of personal choices and now we are hurting the fish and the sharks and the sea creatures.
Jack: That is disgusting! The fish have to live in the sea. That is not fair.
We explored a book following the theme of plastic pollution in the oceans, The Odd Fish, and used our phonic skills to write how we thought the sea creature would feel.
We look forward to updating you on our school assembly.
