Central idea: Humans can explore their environment to understand the world around them.
Our first task was to fully understand the central idea before starting our three lines of inquiry. After discussing and research we made our own version to support our understanding.
Our version: People can find out about their surroundings to learn about the world around them.
Our first line of inquiry, an inquiry into what you see, hear and feel whilst outside has started. We have spent many hours exploring our school environment and discussing what we can see hear and feel. Although it has been cold, the children in Team Oak and Juniper have enjoyed observing the environment around them.
Archer: I can see a fluffy squirrel.
Pearl: Big trees.
Teddy: I can see the frost and I can hear the crunchy grass.
Max: Cold.
Henry: I can see white ice and frost, green leaves and grass and brown sticks and branches.
Nancy: I can hear the birds singing.
While outside, we have applied a range of mathematical skills. We have seen children subitising groups of leaves and berries and comparing the length of sticks and branches as well as comparing the height of different trees.
Upon returning to the classroom, the children have put their recently acquired phonic skills to good use and have written sentences about what they could see.
