Central idea: Celebrations can enhance the way we see the world.
We have had a busy and exciting week in Year 1 as we continued exploring our second line of inquiry: Why we celebrate and how celebrations make us feel.
Last week, we enjoyed a bonfire with Mr Townsend and toasted marshmallows while learning about the significance of Bonfire Night and why we remember Guy Fawkes with fireworks and bonfires. Inspired by the fire and the videos we watched of fireworks displays, the children used their senses to write descriptive sentences such as, “The loud firework went bang,” and “The flames were waving in the wind.” We learned about the key events of the Gunpowder Plot and wrote factual sentences to recall what happened.
When listening to a fireworks display video, the children described hearing “loud bangs,” “sizzles,” and “a crash,” and used musical instruments to compose simple beats to represent the sounds of a fireworks display. Their observations, “The fireworks are like big lines in the sky,” “They are so colourful,” and “They are beautiful, it’s like a pattern”, inspired us to create our own firework artwork using printing blocks to make repeating patterns.
In Maths, we have been exploring number bonds to 10 using part-whole models and discovering the different ways to make ten, noticing that even when we swap the numbers around in our number sentence, the answer stays the same.
