Central idea: People communicate to share knowledge and experiences.
Following on from our deep dive into The Colour Monster, we look at pieces of art that use colour to evoke emotion. We looked at the work of Jackson Pollock and children expressed how this made them feel.
Otis: I like looking at the paintings.
Holly: The paintings make me feel happy.
Tom-Henry: I like the colours he has used. They are nice. They make me feel happy.
Eleanor: It looks like he had lots of fun making his paintings.
Nellie: The paintings make me feel happy because Jackson Pollock has used lots of yellow.
Deanna: The paintings make me feel calm.
Ronnie: He used black paint with brighter coloured paint on top. I like the yellow and blue.
Tyler: He got paint on the brush and flicked it to make his pictures.
Through our art immersion day, we created Jackson Pollock inspired artwork. It was a little messy but it was definitely fun!
Jack: I liked making the pictures.
Ada: I liked spatting the paint on the paper. When the blue and yellow mixed together it made green. Green is calm.
Amora: I liked splatting and spraying the paint. It made me happy.
Arthur: I am using lots of green in my painting because it is my favourite!
Evelina: I can see all the colours mixing together on my page.
Iylah: You have to get a big dob of paint and then flick the brush hard to make Jackson Pollock paintings.
While exploring the history of Jackson Pollock, we discovered that he was born in Los Angeles, USA. Using Google Earth and other maps, we looked at how far away the united States of America was.
Rowan: I think it would be too far to drive there.
Jasper: I think flying there on an aeroplane would be a better idea.
Ora: We can build some aeroplanes out of lego bricks.
The children set to work creating aeroplanes and modes of transport to get from Leigh Academy Marden to Los Angeles.
We started by looking at our locality and then used Google Earth to look at the differences and similarities between Marden and Los Angeles, California. We made maps to help us understand how to get from one place to another.
Alfie: It is hot.
Leo H: There is a big ocean between us. We would have to take an aeroplane there.
Luna: We don't have deserts in Marden. That is different.
