Central idea: Human relationships can create a sense of belonging.
This week in Year 1, we’ve been busy developing our number knowledge by practising how to count on from a given number within 10. We’ve been thinking carefully about which number comes next and which ones we wouldn’t say at all. “If I’m starting with 4, I will say 5 next but I won’t say 3 because that’s going backwards!”
In our inquiry learning, we were amazed to discover that Beegu the alien had crash-landed on our jungle gym! We were eager to help her, creating our own imaginative friends for Beegu and thinking deeply about the relationships she might form with them. “She would be happy with the friend I made because the friend I made would hug her and be nice and help her find her mummy,” was one of many incredibly thoughtful contributions. We let our imaginations soar, drawing Beegu’s home planet and describing her unique appearance.
Our learning also focused on understanding emotions and the relationships that shape how we feel. Using The Colour Monster, we explored what makes us feel happy, sad, angry, and calm. “My Mummy laughing with me makes me happy. I have drawn us all yellow because the Colour Monster is yellow when he is happy.” Today, we reflected on our connections to special objects and how they support our wellbeing. “I love my toy unicorn because it’s cuddly and it is special because I cuddle it every night. It helps me sleep.” As a result of our learning, we understand just how important our relationships are, they help us feel connected, supported, and loved.
