In language arts this week we did a spelling unit with short vowel words. The kids chose the two extra words and decided on "bow and read". We practiced printing our letters neatly and talked about when we use capital letters and when we do not use capital letters.
Next week we will read a story and answer questions.
In math we completed another unit. The kids had compare and order whole numbers to 100 using the symbols for less than, equal to, or greater than (<, =, >). We started a new math unit that the kids have to compare and order whole numbers to 1,000 using the symbols for less than, equal to, or greater than (<, =, >) that we will complete it next week.
In social studies this week the kids worked in teams to write directions from one place to another using key words. They used a ruler to measure the distance between places to learn about map scale. We took a quiz. And we started talking about coordinates.
Next week we will continue with our map skills lessons.
In science this week we did a Mystery Science called "How can the Sun tell you the season?: In this lesson, students discover how the Sun’s path changes with the seasons. In the visual activity, Guess the Season, students figure out the season of the year by studying a photo. Students come to realize that they can use the time of day and length of shadows to figure out the season in each photo.
Next week we will start talking about the moon.

In language arts this week we took our iReady reading diagnostic- it took most of the day Monday. The we read The Tortoise and the Hare. This story addressed the following skills- recalling story details; draw conclusions; describe character qualities; story vocabulary; adverbs to describe an action; adding the suffix -ly to words ending in y. The we watch Disney's 1934 version of The Tortoise and the Hare.
Next week we will be doing another spelling unit.
In math we completed another unit. The kids had Count, read, and write, whole numbers to 1,000.
We will work on a new unit next week.
In social studies this week the kids had to use a map and their knowledge of the cardinal directions to answer 8 questions. We took a little quiz that the kids had to follow directions to color objects in relation to other objects. Then the kids decorated a compass rose (that includes the intermediate directions) following specific directions. Lastly, they had to identify the corner location of each building using intermediate directions and write the house number and street name to houses.
Next week we will continue with our map skills lessons.
In science this week we did a Mystery Science called "How fast does the Earth spin?". In this lesson, students come to understand that the setting Sun isn’t moving, the Earth is spinning. In the activity, Spinning Earth, students use their bodies as a kinesthetic model of the Earth to understand how the speed of the Earth’s spin affects the length of a day.
We will do another Mystery Science next week to learn more about the seasons.
We made it through our first full week!

In language arts this week we read a short story called The Sea Bottom Hotel . It addressed the following areas:
Comprehension: Recalling Story Details; Drawing Conclusions; Expressing an Opinion
Grammar: Categorizing Nouns
Writing: Writing Sentences
We did our first spelling unit and took our first spelling test on words with short vowels. We will take our Fall iReady Reading Diagnostic on Monday.
In math we completed our first unit which was in the area of numbers and operations. The kids had to count, read, and write whole numbers to 100. The also completed their Fall iReady Math diagnostic.
Next week we will do a unit that the kids will have to compare and order whole numbers to 100 using the symbols for less than, equal to, or greater than (<, =, >).
In social studies this week we stared learning about map skills. One skills we learned about and used map legends. We took our first quiz. The we started talking about the compass and had to write directions from one point to another using the four cardinal directions. We will continue with our map skills next week.
In science this week we learned about two different concepts:
Scientists study space in many ways.
The Earth’s movements through space cause day & night and the seasons
Next week we will continue learning about the seasons and day & night by doing some Mystery Science lessons
What a wonderful first few days back! I am exhausted, but very excited for this school year. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other, getting organized and ready to begin learning.
