We had some Halloween Fun today! The kids did some paint by sticker pictures (see a few of them below). We played Halloween bingo. And watched a "scary" kids movie (Goosebumps). Thank you to Dr. Olden our Assistant Principal who got us some yummy pizza.

In language arts we read “How Do You Spell Beware". Some of the skills addressed in this story were: Students will understand that a mystery is about a happening that is not explained to the reader and that a character uses clues to solve the mystery. Students will understand that the mood of the story is created by details and descriptions in the story.
In math we completed a numbers and operations unit. The kids had to group hundreds, tens, and ones. We started a measurment unit that we will finish on Monday.
In social studies this week we finished learning about the six New England states. We did a fun review in class and took a quiz. We will start to learn about the five Mid-Atlantic states next week.
In science this week we learned about Mars. We learned about the outer planets and Pluto. We will take out outer planet quiz next week and start out planet project.

In language arts we completed a spelling unit with short a and short i words; words in the -all & -and families. Then we did a Mystery Writing “It Jumped” . The kids had to expand sentences with details by adding nouns, adjectives, and prepositional phrases to simple sentences.

In math we completed a geometry unit. The kids had to identify, describe, and compare plane objects. We started a new unit that we will finish next week. We finished our math quilt. Check out the pictures below.
In social studies this week we started our unit learning about the 50 states. We are currently learning about the six states in the New England region. We have learned about Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.
Next week we will learn about Vermont. Then do a review and take a quiz on the New England region.
In science this week we learned about Mars. We took a quiz on the four inner planets. We started learning about the outer planets with Jupiter.
We will continue to learn about the outer planets next week.

In language arts this week we read a short story "Visit From Planet Zog". The kids had to:
Analyze and extract information from a science fiction narrative to answer literal, inferential and applied questions.
Use sensory imaging to complete an illustration.
Make predictions based on text, personal background, and experience
Then we did a Design an Alien activity. The kids designed their own alien and illustrated it. They can “roll” to decide what the alien will look like. We also continued our Social Skills Activities
In math the kids wanted to finish some math puzzles they started last week. Then we started working on a Thanksgiving math quilt. The kids have to solve addition and multiplication problems and color the parts of the quilt according to their answer. Look for a picture next week!

In language arts this week we did a Mystery Writing on Topic Sentences "People and Their Jobs". The kids had to identify and create topic sentences & group information to support the topic sentences. We also continued our Social Skills Activities
In math we completed another unit. The kids had to recognize, describe, and extend patterns. We will start another unit next week.
In social studies this week the kids finished up with our map skills lessons with talking about the continents and oceans. The kids worked with a partner to examine a picture that shows 9 different landforms. Then with a partner to complete a puzzle- matching the picture of the landform with the word and definition. Together then completed a matching activity worksheet. When they completed their tasked they individually colored pictures of different landforms that will be displayed in the classroom.
Next week we will start leaning agouti the 50 States.
In science this week we started learning about the solar system. The kids had homework to come up with a fun sentence to help remember the planets order from the sun.

The kids (all but one) want homework- I know I was shocked!
Starting next week I will give the kids a homework packet. I will give it to them on Friday's and it will be due the following Friday.
In language arts this week we read Country Mouse & City Mouse. The kids learned that a fable is a fiction story with animal characters that talk and act like people do and that it has a lesson at the end. They had to analyze different versions of the same fable to compare the points of view of different characters. We also started some Social Skills Activities- Through a variety of discussions and activities students will learn that there are many things for them to think about when they are at school- like what to do, what to say to both kids and adults, who to hang out with, and rules at school. We will continue these activities over the next few weeks.
In math we completed another unit. The kids had to compare and order whole numbers to 1,000 using the symbols for less than, equal to, or greater than (<, =, >) . We started a new math unit that the kids have to recognize, describe, and extend patterns.
In social studies this week the kids did a lot of work with coordinates. This is something they did well with!
Next week we will finish up with our map skills lessons with talking about the continents and oceans.
In science this week we did a Mystery Science "Why does the Moon change shape?" This lesson explores why the Moon seems to change shape (phases) over the course of a month. In the activity, Model the Moon's Phases, students use a styrofoam ball as a model of the Moon and a flashlight as a model of the Sun to gain a better understanding of how the interactions between the Sun and Moon are responsible for the Moon’s phases.
