Longitudinal data indicate students need additional intervention and support to improve their academic reading, writing, and organization. This becomes most evidence when students begin taking their ACC Humanities, English, and History courses. English courses at MECHS must be intentional in their pedagogical practices to explicitly boost these skills and prepare students for the rigors of a college-level course. In addition to curriculum resources, the English department at MECHS explicitly teach:
Note-Taking Skills (Functional notes that adapt to the content area)
In-Text Citations and Annotated Bibliography
Metacognition and Critical Thinking Skills
Critical Reading Skills
Organizational skills
Academic Writing (MLA format) with Embedded Grammar Instruction
