In sixth grade choir, students build on healthy singing techniques, focusing on posture, breath support, tone, and diction. They work on achieving vocal blend through unison singing and develop part independence by singing in two parts. At the start of the year, students try both soprano and alto (in orange and blue). After the first concert, they are assigned to one section for the second concert, as they progress to more challenging repertoire.
Music literacy is an integral part of every rehearsal. Building on elementary foundations, students expand their rhythm skills using Gordon syllables. They also learn solfege syllables and Kodaly/Curwen hand signs, which support their ability to audiate and sight-read on the staff. By the end of the year, students will be able to sight-read NYSSMA level 1 and 2 examples.
Students focus on teamwork, playing an active role in creating a fun and collaborative environment. Building community in choir fosters self-confidence and encourages students to support one another, making them more comfortable taking creative risks. This shared sense of belonging boosts morale and helps every student feel valued. Working together toward common goals strengthens communication, cooperation, and empathy, skills that extend beyond the choir room.
