Te Kūaha is an educational resource from the University of Auckland for students to learn basic te reo Māori and protocol. Te Kūaha makes the crucial link between language and culture, with content covering te reo Māori pronunciation and expressions, tikanga Māori, and the history and values of the University. Te Kūaha has been developed collaboratively with staff, students and alumni who were engaged in developing the concept, sourcing materials, contributing voiceover and providing feedback.
Interactive features within the app support learning for pronunciation of Māori words, introductions, greetings, speeches and acknowledgements, waiata (songs), karakia (invocations and prayers), iwi (tribal groupings and authorities), local geographic features, marae and marae protocol of relevance to the University of Auckland. One of the app’s key features is that it allows users to input their own personal information to create a customised introduction. Audio recording and play back features support pronunciation practice.
Kauwhata Reo (web based). This new website was launched recently, and is the ‘new TKI’ or ‘VLN/pond’ for all resources, links to current websites etc., for Te Reo Māori and Māori Medium education. It looks stunning. There are 4 whata/pātaka/storehouses, and you can navigate in Te Reo Māori or English. You may like to start with the ‘search/whata whātoro’, and look at the awesome material available under curriculum areas. Tai (iOS Android) Tae (Colours) is a fun and exciting app for tamariki to learn colours in the Māori language with a unique Māori perspective. There are 40 high definition flash cards that help tamariki learn a range of colours and objects. Tae's amazing pictures are supported by narration and sounds that help your tamariki learn in an interactive way.
Aki (iOS, Android Google Play). Paddle your waka and escape the taniwha by learning and identifying words and phrases. Finish one level with six dots, then start the next level with a whole new set of words. Once you’ve completed all four levels, play them again and challenge yourself to complete the levels in the quickest time possible with the fewest mistakes. Challenge your friends and family to play and compare their progress and achievements through Google Play Games. Also available is Aki Hauora aimed at Māori language terms for specific words used commonly in the health environment. Developed as a University of Otago research project.
He aha tēnei? (iOS , Android), "He aha tēnei?" (What is this?) is an interactive Te Reo Māori drag and drop game for younger kids and their caregivers. It offers a simple, self-paced introduction to Te Reo Māori words and pronunciation. Introducing simple, useful, every day Te Reo Māori words. Match each part of the word to hear it pronounced. Complete the word to hear it in full. Includes simple, useful, everyday words such as pōtae (hat), tāheke (slide), whare (house) and more.
Kawe Kōrero (iOS, Android ) The Māori language app Kawe Kōrero can be a beginner go-to resource for Māori language and protocol. This tool was created to support Waikato Regional Council staff to grow their Māori language skills and protocol knowledge base. However it is easily applicable for any beginners, or to use an app to explore and begin to use the language examples in your daily work.
Kupu (iOS, Android/GooglePlay) is an amazing photo translation app, that is linked in with Google technology and knowledge from Te Ara Tika Māori Dictionary. It uses your camera to instantly translate objects the camera sees, into Te Reo Māori. You can save the translated image, share it, or have another go. Takaro (Web, Mobile) Use your spatial awareness skills in this fully 3D cube flipping world! Control your energiser cube and to find code blocks then use your skills to control your rolling robot. Get your robot to the exit by giving it commands simply by using the code blocks you find. You'll not only gain the knowledge about what coding is and how to use it but it'll get you thinking in a 3D world and test your mental rotational skills too. Think in systems and puzzle solve in a learning and reactive environment.

Matific (iOS, Android, Web) is now available in Te Reo Māori. Matific is a game-based learning resource for Year 1 to Year 7 students, it is already available in 46 countries translated into 26 languages. It is hoped the new development will play a part in normalising te reo in the classroom and encouraging Māori and non-Māori students to learn and speak the language.
It has been translated by Auckland University of Technology lecturer Hēmi Kelly from the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Development.

iMaori (Android, iOS) iMāori is the App for the modern day learner with karakia (prayers), whaikōrero (speeches), karanga (the call) and key phrases in te reo Māori. iMaori is designed to give you an insight into the Māori world. Māori Pā Wars (web, iOS, Android) Māori Pā Wars is a tower defence app game created both in English and Te Reo Māori options. It is soon to be available on both Android and Apple IOS platforms and it is available to play online via the website. Te Reo Māori Consultant/ Voice Over Artist was Scotty Morrison.
Tipu ( iOS and Android) Kia toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te aroha, toi te Reo Māori. New well designed app that might be useful for whānau or beginner Te Reo. Tipu in schools allows teachers and parents to access detailed information about the progress of their tamariki as they use Tipu to awhi them on their Te Reo Māori journey.
If you join as a Tipu school (cost involved ), there is an attractive range of physical resources to complement in-classroom learning with Tipu. Tipu Schools will receive a selection of these resources as part of their subscription, and they are able to purchase additional resources for a reduced price.
Pepeha (Web) Pepeha is a way of introducing yourself in Māori. It tells people who you are by sharing your connections with the people and places that are important to you. This website was created to help all New Zealanders introduce themselves in Te Reo Māori, through Pepeha. It encourages everyone to learn the stories behind their Pepeha and share them with pride. Once you have completed your Pepeha you can save it to your device, have it printed for display or as a taonga for yourself or a loved one. Low resolution JPG's are free for download.
Te Reo Singalong Books (audio) Te Reo Singalong books make it fun and easy to gain confidence in using te reo Māori. Each book turns into a catchy song with repetitive sentence structure. The gorgeous illustrations help to bring the story to life and each book is packed with extra resources that teachers love: English translation, glossary, activity ideas and guitar chords! Books have a cost, and other resources are available, from magnetic rauemi, to flash cards, to audio links.
COMING SOON : Ka Pai Babe (web, mobile) Ka Pai Babe is a a game world featuring the environments of New Zealand. Ka Pai Babe is a world that features multiple characters each on a journey to heal the world. These characters feature New Zealand native creatures such as the Tui, Kiwi and Kea. Apart from promoting New Zealand and Maori themes another important objective is to promote one of New Zealand's official languages - the Maori language within the Ka pai world. These game are being designed for the mobile market as well as having an online presence.
