Offstage roles for UMaine Theatre/Dance productions come in three categories:
Crew Roles
Student Artistic Team Roles
Maine Masque Show Roles
The process is a little different for participation in each of these. See below for information and email mary.j.sedlock@maine.edu with any questions.
Each UMaine Theatre/Dance production has several opportunities for students to participate in offstage crew roles. These roles do not require prior experience and are open to students of any major/minor. Some shows do not require every role listed below.
Run Crew members and Spotlight Operators are required to attend the Crew View/Designer Run, Technical Rehearsals, Dress Rehearsals and all performances.
Wardrobe Crew members, Light Board Operators, and Sound Board Operators attend Crew View/Designer Run, Dress Rehearsals, and all performances.

Each UMaine Theatre/Dance production has opportunities for advanced students to take on the artistic team roles of Assistant Director, Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, and Props Master. These roles require prior experience and/or faculty approval.
Assistant Directors, Stage Managers, and Assistant Stage Managers attend all rehearsals and productions meetings. Stage Managers and Assistant Stage Managers attend all performances as well, but Assistant Directors are not required at performances.
Dramaturgs attend rehearsals and production meetings on an as-needed basis. The exact schedule can be negotiated with the director, based on the particular needs of a show.
Props Masters attend all technical and dress rehearsals, as well as weekly design/production meetings. Props Masters are not required at performances.

Each year, the UMaine Theatre/Dance Division presents a show which is student-directed and student-designed. All artistic and production roles for this show will be filled by students and more advanced roles-- such as directors, designers, and stage managers-- do not necessarily require prior experience.
Maine Masque (student theatre club) coordinates the selection of a director and show, as well as the application process for all other artistic team roles. More information on the process for show, director, and team selection can be found HERE.
