The following clubs are currently active and recognized by the Theatre/Dance Division:
Dance Club: The purpose of this club is to explore movement in the styles of modern, contemporary, and jazz in a judgment free and non competitive atmosphere. Our goal is to work together to create a piece to show in the Dance Department Showcase at the end of each semester.
Hip-Hop Club: The purpose of the Hip-Hop Dance Club, is to harness and cultivate the art of dance, specifically in the style of hip-hop. Through growth and experience in this art form, we focus on enhancing and bettering individual dancers while guiding them in their passion for dance and individuality. Hip Hop Club aims to provide dancers a safe and comfortable haven to practice this ever-growing way of life as well as a home where dancers can share their styles, help one another, and freely exchange their ideas and thoughts in hopes of strengthening bonds, promoting growth, and establishing a new sense of family.
Tango Club: The purpose of this organization is to give students the opportunity to learn the Argentine Tango dance.
Tap Club: We meet weekly throughout the semester and put together a piece to perform in the end of semester dance showcase!
Celtic Club
Ballet Club
All active clubs typically meet weekly in the Polly Thomas Dance Studio (Room 226, Class of 1944 Hall) or the Black Box Theatre (Room 224, Class of 1944 Hall).
Any student, of any major/minor, may join and participate in any dance club. Flyers with information about club meeting dates/times are typically posted in the Dance Studio and on the various bulletin boards around Class of 1944 Hall. Students may join clubs simply by regularly showing up to the club meeting times or rehearsals. Students can find out more information about a club by contacting an officer of the club. For clubs that are recognized by UMaine Student Government, officer names can be found at the links for each club in the section above.
Many clubs choose to prepare a dance piece over the course of each semester to audition for the Theatre/Dance Division’s Dance Showcase at the end of each semester. Individual clubs may have requirements beyond membership (such as attendance thresholds) for participation in the showcase piece. It is expected that clubs will establish bylaws or other documentation clearly stating their policies on participation.
Any undergraduate student may start a new dance club. Dance clubs must have a faculty advisor and must use the Space Reservation Form to schedule a meeting time in the Dance Studio or Black Box Theatre.
Once a faculty advisor is identified and a space has been reserved, student club leaders should email MJ Sedlock, Dance Program Coordinator, at mary.j.sedlock@maine.edu to be added to the list of officially recognized departmental clubs.
To have a club officially recognized by, or affiliated with, UMaine Student Government (UMSG), students must follow the UMSG Student Organization Recognition Policies and complete the forms/steps outlined on the UMSG website.
Affiliated Student Organizations: A student organization with at least 5 undergraduate members can be affiliated with the Student Life. This type of organization has access to privileges such as utilizing campus facilities, and Center for Student Involvement services, such as: assistance with advertising, event planning and equipment needs and participation in student organization fairs and programming.
Recognized Student Organizations: A student organization with at least 10 undergraduate student members and affiliated status can apply for recognition. A recognized student organization is also affiliated with the University of Maine Student Government, Inc. (UMSG) and has the ability to apply for funding and utilize all UMSG resources.
UMSG recognized/affiliated clubs must submit an Organization Update Form annually, or following any change in officers.
