The Nurse of the Future will influence the behavior of individuals or groups of individuals within their environment in a way that will facilitate the establishment and acquisition/achievement of shared goals.
According to the leadership style assessment results I scored a 22 out of 25 in ambassador, advocate, and people mover. While scoring 21 out of 25 in truth-seeker, and creative builder. I scored a 20 out of 25 in experienced guide. I would have to say that while the ambassador and advocator are both right up my alley as I tend to jump right in to situations that require people to take control of a situation. I would have to say that I am a fierce advocator for not only my patients, and their families but also my coworkers. I try to speak up for the person that is unable to speak up for themselves. As a people mover, I tend to mentor new nurses whenever I get the chance for an example, I worked the night shift a couple of weeks ago on the floor to help out. I hadn’t worked on that floor in about 9 years, there are a lot of new graduate nurses on the floor right now. One of them needed to hang blood and another needed to straight Cath a patient neither nurse had ever done these functions before and needed some guidance because these are things that we do often in the OR I was able to provide experience and mentor both of these nurses to complete the tasks needed to be done. I have been known to keep things moving in the Operating Room when things are really busy and motivate people to be the best that they can do for their patients. I try to empower my coworkers to be a better person and nurse every day. I feel that I have a level of confidence in my nursing skills along with my people skills that isn’t cocky but allows me to command a room when needed.
Empathy is also needed in order to be a good leader, knowing how to read people and to use that information effectively to move people into the right direction is a powerful thing (Sherman, 2018). I strive for these qualities so that I can push the people that I work among in a positive manner to be better with our patients along with our colleagues.
Some of my core values that I pride myself on is integrity, accountability, empowerment and perseverance. I believe integrity is being honest and open with not only my patients but also with administration along with whomever I encounter. I am not the sugar-coating type of person. I was raised to tell the truth in whatever situation that I may be in and that life is a whole lot easier if you don’t have to remember the lies that you have told. To know when a problem arises you are able to identify and solve these problems is a great feeling. I believe that when a problem arises or presents itself that you have to deal with it head on and right then. If you don’t things tend to fester and a small problem can become a large one real fast.
I tend to lead by example and by working along side of them. Being able to pick up your boot straps and work in the trenches along side of your employees is how a good leader becomes a great leader. I try to empower the people that I work with. I also try to have an energy to motivates people that are around me to do better every day.
My vision for the future of healthcare/nursing leadership would be to have the ability to communicate well with others. I find that there is a lack of transparency within leadership. In order to motivate the staff that is working for you there has to be transparency. Within my vision there would be humbleness among the leaders. Leaders will create positive work environments that are all about lifting up nurses unlike the mentality of todays nurses that are out to “eat their young”. By the year 2028 the nursing world will need close to 200,000 new nurses it will be imperative for the seasoned nurses to mentor and create great patient-oriented nurses.
To conclude with the three most important priorities for the healthcare leader would be integrity, communications skills and the final one would be to have tech savviness. With the way that technology has become instrumental in the healthcare world a good leader will need to have the skills to use the new technology proficiently along with being able to trouble shoot when there is a problem. Integrity is defined as a quality of being honest and having strong moral principles and more uprightness. Being able to keep your word with your employees is very important and when you are not able to keep your word being able to admit the mistake and reasons why can go a long way. Respect for the people that work with and for you is a component of integrity. This goes back to “just be kind to others”, when you are kind to others whether they are the housekeepers or the CEO of your hospital it shows what type of person your really are. Communication has many different forms and a good leader needs to be able to have effective skills in verbal, non-verbal, and written communication skills. Good communication skills create clarity and help remove misunderstandings from what is being said. If you are unable to effectively communicate with people this leads to misinterpretation of the information that may be needed.

With the pandemic that has been going on for the past two years people have had to learn how to be creative and think outside of the box. Leadership and management has also had to change as well. With a great leader you can overcome any obstacle that you encounter within your healthcare facility. The BSN program has taught me what qualities a good leader needs to have along with how to be accountable. It has also shown me how to delegate effectively.
While COVID 19 has been at the forefront of all healthcare facilities we in Maine have also felt the effects of the mandated vaccination by our Governor. The case study that I choose to write about was how healthcare workers have become hesitant to get the vaccination but will lose the career that they have worked so hard to get by not getting it. The BSN courses that I have taken have shown me how to lead by example, and effectively communicate what needs to be stated.
Nursing Shortage and the impact that it has on patient safety is dear to me. We as a group wrote about the fall Risks that happen when a patient is admitted to a hospital. I believe that through good leadership the things that you will find in this collaborative paper are things that can be implemented in any hospital.
