The Nurse of the Future will interact effectively with patients, families, and colleagues, fostering mutual respect and shared decision making, to enhance patient satisfaction and health outcomes.
Good Communication is vital to successful patient care. If nurses are not able to communicate effectively and clearly to other healthcare professionals the person that it hurts the most is the patient. With good communication you are able to exchange information, share resources and solve problems collaboratively (Eastern Illinois University, 2019). Communication can increase the trust between patient and nurses. When a patient is able to trust the nurse that is caring for them this can foster a relationship that can lead to vital information from the patient to the nurse to better care for them. When a patient trusts the nurse, they may give them more information than they give the doctor or provider that is treating them. It is our job to make sure that every patient gets the care that they need.
Effective Communication between healthcare providers, nurses, staff and the patient works to build trust and respect. Effective communication not only allows you to exchange valuable information but it also allows you to understand the meaning behind the information being given. I have learned to adapt my communication skills to the audience that will be receiving the information. There are many different ways to communicate either by verbal, non-verbal, and listening.
I have attached a paper I wrote on Motivational interviewing and stages of changes. This paper allowed me to gain insight as we approach things with our patients and how they react to what is happening at that moment at time. The tools that I have gained while in the BSN program have allowed me make appropriate changes to how I communication with people and at their level. Sometimes it is all about your audience and how they will perceive the message you are trying to relay.
The other article that I attached was during our public health class and how communication can help you do better at your job. It also has the barriers that you may find yourself in. If you are unable to know what your bias are, then you as a healthcare worker will not be able to overcome them, let alone have a patient over come theirs.
The teaching plan that I created for a pre-diabetic that needed to lose weight. I felt that this was an important piece, if the patient isn't ready to hear the information that you are trying to communicate to them, then you need to be respectful of them. Sometimes, just having someone that keeps trying is all the push that they need in order to take them out of their comfort zone and change their lifestyle for the better.
