Here’s a simple explanation for potom, předtím, po, před for Czech learners:

1) Potom & Předtím → They are adverbs (příslovce) and describe the order of events in time.

• Potom = Then / After that (something happens later)

• Předtím = Before that (something happened earlier)

Examples:

🔹 Nejdřív snídám, potom jdu do práce.
(First, I have breakfast, then I go to work.)

🔹 Předtím jsem bydlel v Praze, teď bydlím v Brně.
(Before that, I lived in Prague; now I live in Brno.)

💡 TIP:

• Potom = usually answers "Kdy?" (When?)

• Předtím = talks about the past

2) Po & Před → They are prepositions (předložky) and need a noun or a verb in infinitive.

• Po = After (something happens after an event)

• Před = Before (something happens before an event)

Examples:

🔹 Po obědě si dám kávu.
(After lunch, I will have coffee.)

🔹 Před spaním si čtu knihu.
(Before sleeping, I read a book.)

💡 TIP:

• Po → uses locative (lokál, 6. pád): Po práci, po škole, po obědě

• Před → uses instrumental (instrumentál, 7. pád): Před školou, před zkouškou, před spaním
