In English, we often use verbs in two special forms:
Gerunds → verb + -ing (acting as a noun)
Infinitives → to + base verb
Understanding when to use each one is important for speaking and writing correctly.
A gerund is a verb that ends in -ing but functions as a noun.
✅ Examples:
Swimming is good exercise. (subject of the sentence)
She enjoys reading books. (object of the verb "enjoys")
They talked about traveling. (object of the preposition "about")
Verbs that take gerunds:
Some verbs are always followed by gerunds, not infinitives.
Examples:
enjoy → I enjoy playing football.
mind → Do you mind opening the window?
suggest → She suggested going to the cinema.
finish → We finished studying.
An infinitive is the base form of a verb with to (to + verb).
✅ Examples:
I want to learn English. (object of the verb "want")
It’s important to eat healthy food. (after an adjective: "important")
She decided to leave early. (after the verb "decided")
Verbs that take infinitives:
Some verbs must be followed by an infinitive, not a gerund.
Examples:
want → I want to go home.
decide → They decided to stay.
need → She needs to study.
promise → He promised to call me.
Some verbs can be followed by either a gerund or an infinitive, but the meaning changes.
Remember + Gerund vs. Infinitive
I remember locking the door. (I have a memory of doing it.)
Remember to lock the door. (Don’t forget to do it.)
Stop + Gerund vs. Infinitive
He stopped smoking. (He quit smoking.)

Try + Gerund vs. Infinitive
Try opening the window. (Experiment to see if it helps.)
Try to open the window. (Make an effort to do it.)
