SFDs

What's an SFD? It's a "Shitty First Draft"! (No, I didn't make this up...)

Bay Area author Anne Lamott offers a powerful term to help you remember to focus on HOCs first: she advocates turning off the parts of you that act as naysayer, editor, and critic and writing a "shitty first draft" (SFD). Sure, later you can (and should) “fix it up” (25), edit, critique, or “check every tooth” (26) until the drafts become, well, less shitty—maybe even great. “Almost all good writing,” LaMott tells us, “begins with terrible first efforts” (25).
